Presto psi?
    #22386887 - 10/16/15 03:29 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I just bought a 23 quart presto canner and I was wondering if they all come with the 15 psi weight.

Anyone ever bought one of these? I gotta say mycology turned out to be the most expensive hobby I ever partaken in. Hopefully this will be the last expensive buy I make.

A pressure cooker in this hobby pays for itself over and over again. ..yes the presto 23 comes with a rocker for 15psi.

Cool thanks. I definitely hope that the problems im having are due to a shitty italian PC and not some other clusterfuck im doing. Seems it for now at least.

The Presto rocker for my 16qt is three pieces.

1 piece = 5psi
2 pieces = 10psi
3 pieces = 15psi

The weight that came with my 8qt Presto cooker is a single piece for 15psi.

I have the Presto 23 quart too.  I find, like some others here, that adding a little extra weight to the standard weight it comes with helpful.  It makes it possible to keep it at 15psi without a lot of noise.

Pressure cooker and Laminar Flow Hood are the two best investments I've made in this hobby.

What do you use to weight it down/ how heavy? Laminar flow hood is the last thing I want at this point. I wish one but fuck me I already spent over 500 euro worth of supplies and I barely have enough

A FH is completely unnecessary if you make a SAB. Most ppl bitch about working in a SAB and the room. But they're morons who can't think well enough to make one bigger so it's just as easy to work with. Make the arm holes big and wide. If am upside down 110quart tub isn't big enough make it out of plastic sheeting and tube or anything really.

Very light, some people glue a coin to the weight.  I wouldn't recommend it unless you have issues with the standard weight.  Its just a tiny bit of extra weight to stop it jiggling and blowing so much steam at 15 psi.  Then you just adjust the cooker temperature to keep it at 15 psi.

All it gives you is a slight decrease in noise.  If it doesn't bother you with the standard weight, there is no point I guess.

yea man. I'm working in a 66quart sab and it sucks for space, height etc.! Definitely going to upgrade to the 110quart soon.

Yea I have a sab but I am still having a lotta issues with contams on agar.probably doing something wrong sterile tech wise. For example this week I lost 4 plates to trich( or something similiar) and I suspect that it happened while I was sealing with parafilm. I was holding the plate upside down against my shirt. I think this because most contams appeared on the inner corner of the bigger lid plate. Then there was a bacteria contam which I think got transferred by condensation from the lid. Im trying to counter this by leaving my plates without parafilm in my sab with a hot cup of water and the holes closed

For inoculation I dont use the sab(should I?) since I just stab the micropore tape and change it after. Also my sab is kinda small cos it was the only one I could find with a relatively straight lid. Bigger ones had all kinds of curves and steps. Motherfuckers wont do simple stuff anymore lol

Wrap the plates in the SAB. Don't take them out unwrapped.

It's better to use a SAB for inoculation but most ppl using syringes and self healing ports do it open air same for pf cakes inoculation with syringes, and that's fine its just better in a SAB

Make your arm holes bigger and wider apart. If a tote/tub is too small don't settle on using one that small then

That's my presto, and it took a hell of a lot more than a coin. But it sure is quiet without all that rocking.

to get to 20 psi you need like 6-8 quarters on top of the weight. probably a bad idea with a presto. the metal can take it no problem, the gasket though, shit is going to wear out way more quickly.

I put about 5 quarts of rye in each bag... I can run 4 bags in my presto if I really pack it...
