1 week and no cultivation! help!
    #2238592 - 01/13/04 07:56 AM (20 years, 3 months ago)

It has been 1 week since I incoculated my jars and there is no sign of any growth in any of them. I was wondering is there was something I could do or if they are not recoverable.
Here is what I did:

I soaked some wild bird seed in water for just over 24 hours. I then strained it really well and let it dry for like 30-45 minutes. I then put it in my half pint jars with a little dry vermiculite on top. I screwed on the top with tin foil under it. I then pressure cooked all the jars at 15psi for about 90 minutes. After 24 hours I inoculated all of them with 1cc in each jar. I was sure to heat up the needle and wipe it down with alcohol. I then put duct tape over the holes and placed them in a dark warm enviroment (70-75).

The jars seem to not be too moist inside for what I can see. I have opened one up and put some water in to see if that is the case. If that one messes up I dont care because as they are now they all seem to be a failure. Any help on this situation would be greatly apprecited. Thank you.

given your temperature it may take a little longer, 82-85 F is ideal but if they were contaminated you would know it already, either raise the temp a little or wait a little longer

And what do you call this? "The Mix & Match Tek"?

Why would you put whole grain in a half pint jar and top it with verm? I can't see 1 benefit.

You pressure cooked for a tad too long.

and the temp your keeping them at is about 10 degrees too low.

I saw in the grow guides that polyfill is needed for gas exchange when using whole grains. I have never tried grains, but I always use polyfill.

The verm. layer does the same thing everytime, regardless of which substrate you use. You just can't shake.

P.S. That one you opened is definitely contammed :/ .

hrm id say no the verm layer on the cake keeps bacteria out as with grains it is way to easy to have the verm pieces falling with just little movement breaking the barrier. The use of polly fill or tyvek is is the best and keep the dry verm layer for dense cakes.

your supposed to dump it in the jars after it has drained for 5 minutes.

well you PC'd for a long ass time (usually only need about 1 hour from putting your lid on the PC to turning off the flame. also, 1cc per jar is a little low. I know it says to put that in there from the PF Tek but, i honestly put about 3-5cc per jar (i make my own syrings, so no biggy there).

so there is 1 point against you, low amount of spore solution.

your other minus 1 point goes to your temp. 70-75? i dont even begin to sweat at that temp. get that bad aboy up to around 80-85.

also might depend on what type of shroom you're growing. one time i ran some TC and they took 2 weeks to shoot off, and that was with 3cc per 1/2 pint jar.

also... too much water = bad bad bad.

g'luck bro.

This birdseed didn't have sunflower seeds by any chance. Im sure it didn't but if it did then you might have a big problem there. Ive read that in temps as low as yours, its a normal thing for no growth to show for even up to 8 days. I guess at the 10th day and no growth... then something might be up. Get those temps higher man.

Penalties against drug use should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against the possession of marijuana and mushrooms in private for personal use.
