I'm thinking about growing L.W on a larger scale. 1000+ plants. Crazy I know.. I already have close to 200 seedlings and some adults. I've been trying to find the easiest and most effective way to do this. My plan roughly looks like this. Please comment! First I start growing in small plastic containers. Here I can easily get 100 seedlings in small space. They grow here first year.
After one year I repot in plastic tray. Each pot 35x35x70 mm. 630 plants per square meter. Here they grow to flowering size 30 mm. The space needed is 2 square meters. http://www.herkuplast.com/en/program/QuickPot/Danish/QP%2BD%2B104__-__7R.html
Next step I repot to 70x70x110 mm square plastic pots. At this step they take a lot of room and they will live in my greenhouse. Here the grow to adult size. http://www.kakteen-haage.de/en/accessories/pots/pots-saucers-and-planters/Deep-pots-square-7-x-7-x-11-cm-1-piece.html

By definition, once a plant flowers it is a sexually mature adult. Good luck with your project !!!!

More light is the only solution for cacti stretching that I am aware of Just don't burn em.
Supplementing with sun when available can help too if its an option.

ya i just finished giving them a new set up. i had them in smaller tub (with a heating mat), the tube light was bigger then the tub so it had to go it on a weird angle.
So i used a larger tub and cut holes in it so i could put the light much closer.... I also took off painter tape that was on the top of the humidity dome (why not) i had previously used to sort other seedling i grew in this humidity dome
Should help for sure!
I just hope they recover.... they are stretched
Thanks for the reply dude

new set up... lil ghetto for sure. but at least they are getting much better coverage and they are closer to the light
counted 22 babies so far.
Another Quick question....
Ordered 50 Trichocereus Pachanoi Monstrose x Pachanoi and 50 Trichocereus SS02 x Peruvianus SERRA BLUE, last week. Can i just plant them with the LW's? or for some reason should they get their own home (for now)

You plan seems perfectly feasible. I would, however, comment on two things:
- growing L. williamsii to 30mm in 35mm cell trays seems a bit unrealistic. You know how much they grow below soil level, and when they start to get too tight, growth will suffer. Maybe you should consider a bigger cell arrangement, even if it costs you valuable greenhouse space;
(and, by the way, although the math is right at 630/m2, the individual trays have 104 cells and measure 310x530mm. That means that a 1040 plant setup will take 10 trays and 1.65m2, in case it matters).
- if you plan on selling the plants when they reach a reasonable size, those 7x7x11 pots are overkill; you will be better of with 7x7x8 pots that cost a fraction of that and serve you just as well.
Good luck and show us your progress!

don't plant it, let alone water it, before you see any roots.

We need a picture to know for sure but when you plant a Loph to root you do not want to water it AT ALL until you see some decent roots.

IS it better to cut pups in their winter season to graft, while your not watering them?

No. Better cutting them to graft while they're full of water and actively growing. Not to say you cannot graft when they're dormant, although it's important that both the stock and scion are turgid when attempting to do so.

It sounds as if it may be dehydrating, which is normal for a plant without roots. It will shrink and get a bit squishy, like an old potato, before putting out roots. This is normal. If there's any spots or blotches then that's not normal.

If i put them under t5's in a warm condition, they wont go dormant, correct?

Wait for them to root. You should only take cuttings on well hydrated, actively growing plants of a decent size, otherwise they might shrivel up and die before rooting.

That's correct. So long as temperatures are high enough and they're watered then they'll keep growing.

This is the first winter where I'll be looking after an adult loph. What can I expect to happen to it in cold temperatures when it's not being watered, just so I know what to look out for in case I suspect rot?

If the soil is bone dry, and the plant healthy, rot shouldn't just happen because they are cold. As winter progresses, you will see more wrinkling of the body, and it might pull down towards the soil more, all perfectly natural. They have a large reserve of water in the tap root to keep them going, the mass of the root is often greater than the crown. How cold will they be getting?

As long as it doesn´t freeze it will be fine. L williamsii is a very forgiving and tough species.
