I seen a Hitchhicker the other day in my city i wanted to help out.
    #22385162 - 10/15/15 07:28 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

He looked chill as hell, early 20's long dreads, tiedye shirt hemp bag and large backpack. I was in a work vehicle and with a co worker or else i would of totally given that dude a lift. Would of even let em crash at my place if needed. All i could do was give a smile and peace sign back. Normally i dont take the risk but he had a mellow chill ora about him. Wonder if any body here would know, i know occasionally i read about people here doing that sort of thang.
Naptown 465 south, SR 37

Lookin at me you wouldn't think so, i keep a clean look to avoid the fuzz, but im straight hippy.

I've picked up a few people. The young ones these days often take a picture of my license plate if they have a phone and send it to someone, which not only makes them feel safer but makes me know they are legit.

I haven't hitchhiked since the 70s. Most of the ones I see now seem sketchy.

I used to be obsessed with the idea of hitchhiking. I've read a lot about other women traveling and hitchhiking alone, even in remote areas of the globe. Since then, I've seen and experienced things that make me feel like it is a terrible idea for me to do that, and that is just reinforced by reading all those one-off stories from around the globe like Pippa Bacca's(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pippa_Bacca).

I have thought about picking up hitchhikers before when I encountered them, and I would've a few years ago, but every little shred of 'street smarts' that I've learned has pretty much taught me that it's a dumb idea, and I do feel bad - especially because all the hitchhikers I've seen have been hippies or people who have broke down(always on the worst roads!).

If I ever in my life get a concealed carry permit and am appropriately trained and armed(I'm far from it at the moment) then I would pick up hitchhikers. Right now, it's not like I think every(or ANY) of the hitchhikers I've seen are rapist murderers, but literally everything I've been taught or have learned on my own accord has made me instinctively refuse to pick up hitchhikers.

I had a hippy chick for a boss. She hitchhiked from the us to south america in the sixties. That would be crazy now.

I tried to give this kid a ride the other day, he was crutching down the damn street in this big neighborhood and was probably 13 years old. I pulled over and asked if he needed a ride and he said no thank you but I could tell he was really freaked out by it. I felt bad leaving him cause I was on crutches this summer and I know it sucks. I have no idea why he'd be going down the street on crutches.

I don't believe the hyped up notion that we're living in a more violent time now compared to then. If anything, I think the '70's(I was born in 92, for reference) must've been insane, because I think I'd have a greater chance of being murdered then than now.

But you're not the first one I've heard who has alluded to some kind of change between hitchhiking culture between then and now. You read about so many serial killers and/or murdered hitchikers from that era, that I'm really not sure at this point. And it goes both ways, for both drivers, and hitchhikers.

You're a good person for doing that, and I see where you were coming from, but I understand even more that kid's reluctance to do something like that.
With all the 'stranger danger' stuff that started in the late '80's(and is just crazy now) I wouldn't expect anything else.

I've picked up a few people. I'm young though so I'm not threatening at all, most just need a ride a few miles away or a town or two over, no biggie.

that's kind of a dick move dont u think?.. good idea, but still kinda dickish if u think about it..

next time they do that u should take a picture of their face and send it to one of ur friends

i saw like a legit looking hitch hiker for the first time not too long ago in my part of town. it was a guy and a girl, one of em had dreads i think. they each carried large hiking backpacks on their backs all stuffed with shit sticking out from out of the bags like u see in movies about hitch hikers. it was a rare siting to say the least, i'll tell u whoat, especially in this neck of the woods u NEVER see that type of stuff. it was almost like catching a glimpse of big foot, like it was mythical n shit, surreal- is the word i'm looking for.

needless to say, i took it as a good sign from the gawds, cuz arent hitch hikers suppose be lucky n stuff?..

I moved to the mountains recently and I've picked up a few hitch hikers since I've been here. Never really saw it in the city, mostly backpackers just trying to get around.

While taking a picture of the license plate seems like a good idea from the hitchhikers standpoint, I think id feel slightly insulted as the driver. Here I am picking up a stranger with blind faith. Taking the time out of my day to do something kind, and you automatically assume I'm a big person by taking a picture.

Hitch hiking always seemed relatively safe to me, but to the woman on here being weary, probably wise. I swear I run into creeps daily. Can't imagine having to deal with them as a woman. I don't blame woman for treating every man like a potential rapist. Sucks when you are an honest person, but I don't blame them and its a smart move.

I tried to pick up a female hitch hiker once who immediately put her thumb down when she saw me. I'm a male in my early 20s driving an older car, I'm guessing she would have felt safer if I was female, or at least with a female. The older car probably doesn't help situations.

As a young women, I refuse to believe that the majority of men have ill intentions or would do anything to take advantage of me. The vast majority of people I've met are kind and compassionate. I've been stranded a couple times on the side of the road and helped by random men who have been nothing but respectful.
I think that most people are good and too complex to even begin to generalize.

But there is certainly a barrier keeping me from considering picking up men who are hitchhiking, I would consider picking up another women, but honestly everything I've read and been told makes me feel like I'd be stupid for picking up randoms in general.

As down to earth as that is, and believe me it's rather refreshing knowing that some woman have some faith in males these days, it seems like a dangerous frame of mind(excluding the bottom excerpt) when getting picked up by a stranger in the middle of nowhere. Props to you though

I wouldn't really trust my sense of vibes to take a risk like that.

Though I know it's common world wide to tramp.

I've run into the downside of that trusting/naive sort of world view, believe me, but I have the hardest time believing even a significant amount of humanity has 'evil' intents - people are deeply misguided, and flawed, but nothing in this world is as black and white as people would have you believe - It's only reinforced that random people are not likely to be the ones that try to hurt me. Doesn't mean I pick up randoms, but I'm not concerned about most people. Statistics, and unfortunately, personal experience, have taught me that I'm most likely to be hurt or fucked with by acquaintances/people I already know.

And honestly, I'm used to driving through the sorts of areas where you don't sit at any intersections regardless of whether or not there's a red light, I'd honestly argue that I'm too paranoid.

I can't see getting myself into a situation with a stranger that I couldn't escape - even if I picked up a hitchhiker, I'm in control of the car and I can stop and get out and run or do whatever I want, but I feel you - I don't know how I'd judge who I'd accept a ride from and who I wouldn't - but that's why I kind of did a 180 on hitchhiking :sun:.
