Dedicated pc for gaming?
#22384858 - 10/15/15 06:23 PM (8 years, 3 months ago) |

I was thinking about just dropping the cash on a new tower and making it just for pc gaming. I wont go all out quantum processer top of the line quad gfx card, water cooled...not that loaded. But i was thinking of getting one with FO4 recommended requirements, ya you see where im going with this. And not load junk software. What OS would be ideal for something like this? Win10? Linux? And would i need a Anti Malware and Virus and all that jazz? I'm wanting to get a bare bone power house. Not even loading pictures or music on it. Just for Gaming.

If you want to play new games windows 10 is probably a good idea. I love linux but it's not great for gaming.

^^^ Don't even consider Linux for a dedicated gaming rig. Sure, you can play lots of games on Linux with some fanangeling.. but it's a pain in the dick. And lots of games just plain wont work.

Thanks, I'm dropping 1,239.00 on a tower at my local private owned pc shop, gonna get it either monday or Wednesday. It's got 8coreI7, 970 or 980 gtx cant remember, a slick military style case, 8g ram, 2tb hd, 850w power. Dude said it comes with a free W10 upgrade. It was a custom build, that some guy sold for (insert whatever real reason) but it looks sweet. Definitely a upgrade from what i got now.
One thing, the games I'm going to play recommend a 64bit. I plan on making sure the upgrade is the 64bit, but would it play at all if it was a 32bit?

Sounds pretty slick - I think the part that will most likely limit you first is your RAM - I have 8gb as well and a similarish build and it's usually the first thing to cap in certain situations. Fortunately 16gb isn't really expensive.
And 64bit will perform more efficently but 32bit in any case will be just fine as well - fully compatible.

brick and mortar pc shops tend to have a high cost increase because they need that much more profit to survive. Thats most likely why.

Steam works on arch linux. Quite well i might add. Ive only tried kerbal space (only I got)
And minecraft
Im sure diablo if I tried (not gonna)
Though I wont try bluestacks either.
A casual gaming rig would be boss because of linux. But your right about dedicated... Although those games they out perform win7.

I cant tell you how relieved im am. I did some searching and the answers i got was they should run all the time. Is it just for this model or something? I know the card i have now a gtx 560 runs soon as start up and stays on then runs hard under load.

My 680 vid card fans run all the time, just usually barely moving when at the desktop, and they fire up fast when I put the card under load in a game or something.
Are you sure they are completely not running? What happens if you load up a game and start playing, do they spin up then?
If you can visually validate they are not moving at all, even when using the PC for gaming, then there is something wrong.
If they start spinning up when you play games and stuff, then everything is working as intended and they are just not running because there is no heat load to need to be removed.

An 8 core i7? I'm guessing it's probably a 4 core i7 with hyperthreading (which is perfect for badass gaming.) Make sure it has an SSD for your Windows boot up. It's a cheap addition that makes all the difference in the world when it comes to the responsiveness of your PC. You can get a small SSD just to install windows on for under $100 if the PC doesn't already have one, I can't recommend it enough. I'm sure it's 64 bit windows so don't worry about that.

Some newer graphics cards and PSU fans only spin when needed. "Eco-mode" or some shit. The fans wont kick on until about 60-65c.

My new rig... i noticed the power supply is only 850w, i know with my old pc i ended up having to get a 900w. I don't know if this will interfere with gaming on the new games or not. And since i bought it used, i dont have the comfort of knowing it's history like my old one. Oh well, it is what it is. As long as it games. Has a free upgrade to W10 64bit 8core AMD CPU 48gb System Memory 2tb HD 4gb GTX 970 DVD-RW Built in 10/100 on motherboard, whatever that means Built in sound, video came with Gaming Razor mouse and keyoard

This could be power saving
or your power supply isn't strong enough.

Had an MSI GTX 960 Currently running an EVGA GTX 980 ti
The fans only run when it passes a certain heat threshold as Shroomism mentioned. Since you have an EVGA card, if you really want to, you can get EVGA PrecisionX to change your fan temperature curve or set the fans to always be active, but it is not necessary.

I swore in the ECO mode stuff it still is turning, just only a tiny tiny tiny bit, so it doesnt have to spin up from a dead stop / cold every time you hop into a game then hop out...
Maybe thats just mine with my settings though. *shrug*

It could be settings. It might also be ambient room temperature. Know the default curve on my card is rather gradual, but if my room is warm enough the fans slowly spin while on the desktop.

New question, i was testing out the rig just finished up some custom w10 details and installed driver updates. I installed Crysis and ran the graphics to VeryHigh and x4 Anti Aliasing and it looked sweet. Only when i was in this setting i noticed on my screen (not tearing) a line blur that looked like it ran a scan up my screen, it did this off and on but only on the higher settings.
What the heck was that? My screen is new with 120hz possible, the connection was dvi, (use a hdmi maybe?) Or was this the result of my card telling me i was pushing it to the threshold?

Turn V-Sync on the Nvidia control panel, or off. Although a line blur is kind of not very descriptive.. test it in other games and benchmarks

I made my friend a fallout 4 computer for recommended gameplay on the cheaps, the game has insane recommended requirements and he still isn't getting an i7, which the game recommended..
Fallout 4
Recommended Windows 7/8/10 (64-bit OS required) Intel Core i7 4790 3.6 GHz/AMD FX-9590 4.7 GHz or equivalent 8 GB RAM 30 GB free HDD space NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB/AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB or equivalent
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Jz7TK8
Still cost $1k

I wouldn't want to play it w/o at least an i5-6600 and a gtx 970 ideally an unlocked i5 to OC w/ a nice little closed loop cooler from corsair...
Look at how hilariously bad the top end AMD processor is on the low end of FPS, 16ps.... I'd sooner have the i3 which may run at lower avg fps but at least the low end is 35fps....
Just in case anyone thinks they're getting a steal w/ an 8 core 4.7ghz amd processor, ya ain't. The dual core i3 schools it imho.

I try to spread the benchmarks like the fucking gospel my friend So many people think that Intel is a rip off. This needs to be demythologized, but it's almost impossible... People see cores and gigahertz, but do not understand the architecture and don't even look at the gaming benchmarks.

Intel has pretty much always stomped AMD when it comes to gaming. Even waaaaaaay back in the day I had an AMD 233 and its integer performance was nicer then the pentium, but the floating point (FPU) sucked balls which directly affected all the 3d games that were just starting to really come out, like quake.
I really think a lot of it comes down to the fact that AMD always tries to be the cheaper options, more geared for budget and there is just a point where it would require them to significantly raise their price to get their performance more in line with intel.
I think for non-gamers an AMD chip would work fine, for mom and dada, gramps and grandma, etc. But if you need the uber horsepower on a desktop machine, Intel's higher end chips are the way to go.
