Is this a toxic Gymnopilus
    #22384717 - 10/15/15 05:54 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Found these yellow orange mushrooms growing on a dead log down by a creek in Eastern US.

They were growing in clusters all over the dead log.

Some were big and some were small. The bigger ones that were on the outside of the the log were darker orange-brownish from being exposed to direct rain I suppose.

The mushrooms that I found growing under the log protected from the rain were more yellow.

Most all of the mushrooms displayed some form of bluish purple bruising.

All of these mushrooms had a strong sweet odor to them. Spore prints were Orange. I believe this is some form of Gymnopilus mushroom, possibly Gymnopilus junonius.

Hoping to hear some thoughts from more experienced folk on the site.

This may be a close mistake, but compare to Gymnopilus liquiritiae and Gymnopilus luteus.

You might have to dig deep to identify 'em.

Thanks for the quick replies. Anyways it looks like it could be G liquiritiae, but the description for G. liquiritiae has an odor mild or sometimes like raw potatoes.

These mushrooms I found have a strong sweet odor.

The description of odor for Lutues says pleasant.
These ones do smell pleasant but also smell a lot like anise seed.

Safe to say these wont severely poison someone?

i made gym tea last weekend.  about 80g wet into tea for 4 people gave us some mild giggles and little else...  i wasn't expecting much more, fwiw.  Still a great time.

Gyms are awesome but take some qty to really get you rolling.

Thank you for reminding people that no species of gymnopilus will poison anyone. Long as you are 100% sure a species is gymnopilus and have confirmed it with trusted identifiers on here, it will not harm you

Just realized the post said no known toxic gymnopilus so I assume there's a very small chance there could be some unknown toxic gyms but that's why sites like this exist, the members here are knowledgeable and can tell you if you found something that seems odd or new
