Preparing white millet jars. Ok now i'm pissed...
    #2238341 - 01/13/04 02:51 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

This is the thread where I basically ask people who use 100% millet grain how they prepare their jars.  This is the second time I try and again, it's a total failure.  I'm getting pissed of throwing away so many jars.

Here's what I did so far, without much success :

First time :

Didn't soak the grain at all, simply cook it for an hour and got a big slurry.  What a mess.

Second time :

Soaked the grain for 12 hours. Drain it for an hour.  Load my jars. It was looking very good so far.  Pressure cook the jars at 16 psi for maybe 85 minutes.

I removed the jars from the PC and after 4 hours and still hot, I shook them to realized that I got another slurry in the middle of the jar.  Looks like too many grains exploded during sterilization and I highly doubt that these jars will colonize well.

Now, I really wanna give it a try with millet but I just can't seem to find a way to prepare em.    Didn't have any problem with popcorn and WBS.

Please guide me to a slurry-free millet preparation tek!

  thanks

.fs.

I have used with success 350 ml volume millet, 250ml water & 1/4 teaspoon of gypsum to each jar. Give it a stir, leave 24hrs. Pressure cook for 75 minutes at 15psi. I have very dry millet, I can get away with that much water.

Lately I have been putting 350 grams weight millet to 225ml water & 1/4 teaspoon gypum to each jar. Again, stir. Leave 24hrs. Pressure cook for 75 minutes at 15psi.

The drier ratio because I use 20ml of liquid mycelium to each jar.

Millet btw will vary in water content from source to source. So what I have posted might not work for you.

Ive had good luck with boiling it for 30 minutes and while still hot rinse SEVERAL times with cold water till all the crap that forms is gone. i just keep filling the pot with cold water and stir and let the millet settle then pore off the top and redo till i get all floaters out of it. then let sit in the clean water over night then drain for 3 or 4 hours till drained completely. load in the jars 3/4 full then pc for an hour. after the hour is up, let of the steam, remove the jars and shake them, put back in the pc close the top and let cool. seams to get just the right amount of water.
