New guy :) First grow

Whats up everyone. My names moshe, glad to join shroomery! This year i've been getting more and more curious about cubes and i was just slowly gravitated into learning about cubes, cultivation, experiences, etc. I was just naturally drawn more and more to the shroomies i felt like they were calling me.
Heres an album of my first attempt at cultivating some cubes. Hows it look so far?
http://imgur.com/a/SXC5V Heres the tins in colonizing stage. I use cake tins in a tub. I kept one lid on just to see how much faster the myc would spread.
http://imgur.com/a/JvbwT heres where i'm at right now as of today. Just started fruiting, hoping to see pins in next week. The tub i used has 8 holes total. 4 at the sub level, 2 on each side at 1.25 inches width tightly packed with poly. The 2 other holes above them on either side are 1.5 inch holes and have loosely packed poly. The 2 holes on either long end are i think 1.65? not sure a bit bigger than the 1.5 i believe and are also loosely packed with poly.

I may be wrong, I'm just gonna throw these out there... it looks to me to have a bacterial infection, or is going aerial in search of oxygen...either way, don't look right to me...

Good job. How many days it took to coloniza on this stage?

What was your spawn and substrate and did you case?

I posted the myc on reddit and showed a few peeps and I was told it's just aggressive rhizomorphic mycelium growth, which is a good thing. Shows strong growth i guess?

Day one of fruiting today. The casing took about 10 days to colonize completely

Spawned to a 2lb rye grain bag. I cant remember the strain so we'll see when they grow. I took the colonized rye and mixed it about 50/50 with coco coir and some verm. Eye-balled it. I'd say a 50:50 mix of rye and 30/70 verm coco mix.
Yes, i have about half an inch of the coco/verm mix on top as casing (what you see the myc growing on right now)

I figured that was a casing on top that was fully colonized. You should be seeing pins with in the next 3-5 days. You will first notice little white specs (hyphal knots) all over the place. Once this happens pins will start to form.

@insanemike
I just got a bit unsure of myself. I know that it says to case with a nutrient-free substance. I cased with 30/70 verm/cocoa, is that a big deal? Will my yield be less since it's not cased with verm or something else?

Nahhh you got this. As long as that aerial mycelium is in fact not because of bacteria then you're good. Don't listen to anybody on reddit though, they're fuckin awful over there. Talking about wiping sterile syringes with isopropyl alcohol, talking down on flame sterilization (the only way to properly sterilize outside a PC), colonizing in the dark, or god knows what else.
Coir/verm makes a fine casing though as long as you wait a few days before you add it. Otherwise it's likely to get consumed... looks like it might've. That's not a problem either though, it just means you don't have a casing really anymore. Good thing cubes don't need em.

hahaha. Cool, thanks. So this type of mycelium is not a good sign? Bummer, I thought i had beginners luck with awesome myc lol.
How does my fruiting chamber look? the bottom 4 holes are super tight and the top 4 on each side are very loose
now im freakin' out that i a contam lol. what do you suggest it is cobweb?

It can be fine. It's not the end of the world. Aerial mycelium shows up for a number of reasons, sometimes no reason at all, but it can be a sign of bacterial infection.
You would know if it was cobweb because you wouldn't even be able to see anything else. Seriously, look at a picture of cobweb, the shit grows the size of a quarter pound of polyfill in like a day.

Well... you have a mono full of trays that's about to pin so... I mean... you're closer to a good flush than I am right now.

what was this rhizomorphic mycelium i was told about?

I done told you it was fine.

Yours is just REALLY spiky. It either has bacteria or it doesn't, it should still produce something.

Rule #1, mushroom cultivation and Reddit do not mix - stay far away from that place and the information they spread!
/u/knotheadtoo, mod at /r/mushroomgrowers, literally said once that still air boxes and flame sterilization are "bullshit," which couldn't be further from the truth. those guys have their heads so far up their asses, and the community surrounding them does not know enough themselves to call out such bullshit. his bad info is constantly upvoted because his celebrity status, and whenever anyone corrects it with factual information, they flip shit and respond with downvoting to censorship. Fuck that!
Now, as for your substrate and the aerial mycelium.... I would personally mist it to knock down that aerial myc. I've found the extra surface area from aerial myc can speed up evaporation from the surface of the substrate, so a little misting will help with the initial pinset.

I hear you guys.
Just a question though, why would i get such aerial mycelium (lets just say its not bacteria)? Thats supposed to be a sign for poor FAE right? During colonization it just grew this way. So how do you tell the difference between the arms of aero myc. and the branching of the "good" rhizo myc?

Aerial mycelium isn't a sign of poor FAE. That's fuzzy feet, and even that can be attributed to genetics in high FAE grows.
Aerial mycelium is really just the no-longer branching strands of a rhizomorph, or at least it seems. If it weren't in the air it would be in the substrate and it would look more or less normal there. Just don't worry about it. Those are all signs you have cube myc, nothing else takes on that spikiness, so hold onto that for now.

If they look like tiny white speckles all over the place. it won't be long before you begin to see pins.
