stagnant incubation and reuse of substrate
    #22380528 - 10/14/15 07:56 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Shroomers, I'm a newbie, and have enthusiastically embarked on this cultivation madness. Am a pretty decent horticulturist, and am incapable of neglect living things (and things that could live). I watched one of the youtube "how to" videos on PF Tek many times over, took my time gathering materials, so I followed the directions. Got my syringes, filled 9 jars w/ the vermiculite, rice flour, water mix, inoculated, all sterile, just like the video.

Now, that was 4 wks ago (going into 5th), and I have exactly 1 mycelia growth spot in 1 - of 9 - jars (looks just like the vdo). No contamination at all. Am in the east, and have used a heater to keep the temp in the 84-94 range, in the dark. Kinda disappointed (wanted to be able to offer product to my bro when he visits for T'giving!).

Two part Q:

1) maybe the substrate is too dry? it looks dry. Is it possible to re-hydrate the current jars, for the moist environment?
2) I assume the spores are still in the jars, so is there a way to re-use the jars as is, or re-do some step or other to enliven the spores?

Have yet to come across similar query on this website. Thank you!

those temps are a tad too high, you have to realize cubes can grow in colder temps just a little slower, which is ok because contams dont like the cold so the cube myc can take over easier. and you can re sterilize them then inoculate them again.  screw youtube, watch RRs lets grow mushroom vids.

That is very high on the temperature spectrum of ideal... 10-12 degrees cooler would be more what you wanna be at... light is beneficial to mycelium growth in all stages, the "in the dark" thing is waaaaay outdated... and because this is the second pf tek moisture loss question I've seen today... I had 2 pf tek jars that I never inoculated from the beginning of April in my fridge, I opened them and crushed them...they waa still enough moisture in them that they would probably have been fine to go ahead and use...so your moisture level is fine after 5 weeks.

86°F is not going to kill your spores...I wouldn't toss them yet, I'd drop the Temps and see wait it out...you can start a new batch, but I wouldn't throw them out.

Okay, SS, am a little dejected, was kinda arrogant thinking I'd have this technique down early on, but, nay. Will reduce temps, pop corn, and watch RR.

L, I had wondered about the "dark" thing, it's contrary to the endeavor, eh? Appreciate your practical guidance on the problemo, and will follow. Much obliged!
