New truck, good deal?

I'm looking at buying a new vehicle since my truck is on its last leg. I have always liked the 2000-2005 style of the Silverado so I was browsing the dealerships in town and they have a 2003 Silverado 1500 4x4 with 138k miles. I talked to one of the sales people and the list price was at $11,991 and over the 45 minutes I was there I got the price down to $10,700. I told him I have to think about it (hoping he comes down a little more) and I'll call him this weekend.
Do you think $10,700 is a good price for that vehicle?

Holy shit, 11 grand for a 13 year old car with high miles?
Look around tons more or go to craigslist. KBB any car you buy
that's a huge rip off
They know they'll NEVER sell it for that much unless it has some incredible mods or something done to it
I would offer 5 grand MAX, and when they say no walk. 3 days later they'll call you and offer it for 7.
According to KBB that car with those miles goes for around 4500 in mint condition

well most dealers carry a 30-45% mark up on the cost + recon of the vehicle, typically that year make model, will take 1500 +- to recondition and put it back safely on the road.
if you do the math on that, you are looking at around 3200 (trade in for the vehicle) + 1500 (recondition of vehicle) + 30-40%
if you are going to buy that truck i would wait till the end of the month, ask the sales guy how their month is doing, if he says not so good or any variant of that thereof i would offer them 6900 and settle at 7500
anything about 7500 for that truck you are getting taken for a ride.

I still wouldn't pay more than 5000-6000 for it. It's worth the extra grand not to deal with the retards on craigslist
The dealers buy these cars for nothing at auctions. Guaranteed they didn't pay over 1500 bucks for it.

dude, you are forgetting that, used cars dont always come from an auction.
i used to run a used car lot for a gmc dealership.. the price i gave would be a fair offer for that truck, giving the dealership some operational cost money.
there is a benefit and a disservice dealerships supply. thats the fine line between it.
you cant take the excellent cost of a private sell kbb and compare it to a business that has done most of the work for you and compare the two. thats just bullshit..

11k is crazy tho reconditioned or not. it is a 4x4 tho which is usually highly desired. it would go for like $3-5k on craigslist, but then you'd most likely have to put new brakes, brake lines, sparkplugs, oil change, radiator flush, differential fluid check, tranny fluid change, prolly some shit with suspension or control arms, depending on where you live your fuel tank will almost be rusted through.
but a dealership well you kinda gotta trust that they did all that shit and they most likely didn't. almost all the stuff ive bought from a dealer like big dealerships, about 6 months later they fall apart on me. my last one had a leaky light on the roof, was a slow leak in the corner, ruined my leather seats. Then few months later the tranny leaks, at least supposedly. when i crawled under it, it was leaking from above the tranny like from the engine somewhere, but the dealer said it around where the wires go into the tranny supposedly......they sounded full of shit to be honest and the fluid wasn't even red. pretty sure the light thing is still leaking tho....fucking fords
anyways my points is dealerships are worse than craigslist at this point don't buy shit from them its all overpriced and they fuck you hard on tradeins. i had a car that booked for 6.5k nothing wrong with it, they only offered 1k trade

genuine dealerships do the work. the ones i worked at did.
at the end of the day, you still bought a used car. and many times, different driving habbits will cause a car to fail differently.
oh and ford did have a tsb about the transmission electrical connector sleeve leaking. on some models.
and yes, sometimes a tech will lie to you to cover his own job.
and i think 11k for that truck is asinine, but given all the details in this thread, and knowing a little about op position, getting into a used truck thats worthy from a dealer just aint going to happen.

Why don't you just lease a new one? That's always what I did and then I bought them after 4 years. Got another 4 years. 200,000 miles was kinda the limit every time. Start a cionstruction company and you can deduct the lease and the loan after from your tax base.

u should liek maybe try using kbb yourself dude lolz.......its listed as 21k on there right now and i didn't even put any options on except for the flex fuel engine and 4x4
alot of 4x4's back in 2009 were going for 35k+ some and im not even talking heavy dutys here, were going for 45k+
granted you can go and get a 4x4 fx with no options for like 21k or something silly cheap like that but meh

based on the math, 12,000 would be a good starting point for negotiations. settle at 13,500 if they meet you there.
if everything checks out though. dont let disparity let you make a stupid decision.

Well fortunately I have a back up vehicle to get me around for a few weeks, but I want to get a vehicle within the next 2 weeks if I can. I am going to email the dealer back about the 2003 Silverado and say if he cant go $9,000 or less I wont even come test drive it.
I will send in for more info on the 2009 Sierra and see what they say. I feel they wont go under $15,000 for it but maybe. It blue books higher than that

dude no. 7k max.
It's a 4500-5000$ truck on a good day. I'd also suggest you get it checked by a good mechanic. That many miles on a work truck is bound to have some issues somewhere.

i wouldnt call it a quota, i would call it spiffs, at my dealership, if i moved 35 cars in a month i would get 2500 bonus on the next commission check.
so guess what, i was moving cars the last few days to make that shit happen.
or you could call around to dealerships in your area and ask them what their used car inventory is on plus 35 days, see if anything peaks your interest and get a good deal that way.
never buy at sticker price, always start your negotiations way lower, dont be afraid to walk away if the deal isnt right.
also, take ranoutofweed 'advice' with a grain of salt, hes tried to send some people with auto troubles down a horrible path before.

Maybe if it was a lifted Duramax with zero rust. But if it is gas that is extraordinarily high of a price. I have a dealers license, what state are you from? I can find you a hot deal.
My brother just got this lifted Silverado for about $3800. Rust free from Texas, 4x4, 5.3L with higher miles (250K) but here in Michigan rust-free goes for top dollar.

How handy are you? How much do you know about cars? Have anyone in your family/friends who are good with either?
My advice, go through Craigslist, just be vigilant about who you're buying from. Make sure everything checks out. Check that truck top to bottom, and give it a good solid test. Tell the owner you wanna jump on the freeway for a minute and he can go with you if need be. Don't just put around the neighborhood (someone just got burned like that a week or two ago here). Ask the owner what it's issues are, and then verify them yourself. Look for other issues they may be trying to hide (plenty of guides to google for that sort of thing). Get a general KBB value on the truck before you meet up, deduct costs of repairs that will need to be made from the asking offer the best you can.
If the deal isn't right or something seems off, walk away. Do NOT let them sweet talk you into taking it then because "he's got other buyers" or some shit. If it ain't right, just walk away. Better to lose out on a good deal you're unsure of, than risk it and get burned.
Done right you can get a vehicle for much cheaper than you'd ever pay off the lot.Quote:
FruitOfLife said: HOLY SHIT 250k miles
My wife's newest car has 195k on the odometer. We got it cheap and I fixed it cheap and it has proven so far to be a solid car. I really don't expect any major malfunction for quite a while. It is running way too well for it to break down in a month. It had issues that needed to be fixed and I figured them out ahead of time and factored that into what we paid for it. I did miss a couple, but it was nothing major. One of the rims was cracked on the inside, which only added like 100 bucks on to expected repair costs.

With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way. I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today. Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear. I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear. You can't wake up, this is not a dream. Best part about the older model 5.3L is that they are a dime a dozen at junkyards for $300-$500. Motor blows and you put a new one in. Easy to rebuild trans if it goes.
And suspension/brakes/tires you'll be changing that whether it is a 0-mile car or 500K mile car.
What matters most is the body.

Well a dealer contacted me on that 2009 Sierra and he said the list price is fair and already $2,700 below kbb price. I told him $15,000 was the highest I would go so we'll see if he calls back within the next couple weeks

I live in NY. I never had a 4WD truck. And trucks suck in the snow. You just gotta know how to drive in it.

So go for it and pay the extra bucks in purchase and gas mileage.

Yeah I love Montana. There is some much to do outdoors and tons of close, easily accessible places. But last year I got my truck stuck deep in the snow because of lack of 4 wheel drive and the fact that it went from a few inches of snow to about 2 feet of snow real quick

After browsing a lot of the in town dealerships online I have found that 90% of the vehicles 2009 and older are over 100k miles. Even a 2011 Silverado had 127k miles.

Well I finally settled for a 2005 GMC Canyon 4x4 with 109,275 miles on it. The dealer had it listed at $10,999 and I got it for $9,800 It was honestly the best deal I've come across so far and its a nice truck that should hopefully last me a while

Not a bad price I guess.
It's pretty old for 10k but whatever floats your boat. Plenty of 2012+ cars for around 10k. Subaru would have been a better choice unless you actually need a truck
