King Oyster and Pasturized Fuel Pellets with Wheat Bran
    #22379944 - 10/14/15 05:53 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I just made up a filter patch bag with 3 lbs of PFP and 4 oz of wheat bran using Lipa's tek. Any bets as to whether it will contaminate.

Following.

My bet is on no contam.

I'm thinking of doing a run of King's also. Can't decide on what substrate I want to go with though.

I'm quite new to this, but from what I've read the more supplement the higher the risk of contamination, specially when just pasteurizing (as in Lipa's Tek).

Anyway, it would be great to get a more informed opinion from a veteran cultivator

If you can get it through, I might consider doing this for my next King Oyster grow.

I'm no veteran, but I enjoy experimenting some times. If my calculations are correct I used approximately 8% bran and approximately 17% spawn. We shall see.

The spawn has started to spread to the substrate. So far so good.

Such a low supplement rate and high spawn rate you should be ok? I would definitely treat it almost like it's sterilized with the bran and be as sanitary as possible with your grain transfer. Did you add any gypsum? I actually have 6 4 kilo lipa bags pasteurizing right now in a cooler. First batch so i'm keeping it just the oak pellets and 7% gypsum. Ill be doing kings as well. What do you plan on using as a casing layer?

No gypsum in this one. But I have just started trying some with and without to see if there is much difference. I hear some say it makes a difference, and some say that it doesn't do much. I also don't think that I will case them. I have heard that it really doesn't need a casing. I know that it would help with moisture retention, but I plan to just cut slits, so that shouldn't be a problem. If I do try casing later, I will most likely go with verm.

So far, so good. Seems to be colonizing well, and no sign of contamination, regardless of what the poor pic may appear to show.

Thanks! I hope I can get some decent fruits. I have some outside right now pinning, but humidity has been a problem.  Just to low right now. They pin and die. Also temps varying allot. Anywhere from 35-70 degrees. May have to bring them inside and put them in a SGFC. Stems will just be bigger I guess.

maybe try putting them in a poly tent? That would help with humidity and stabilizing temps.  You can even put some pails filled with water to act as heat sinks to keep the temps more stable. Or better yet make the tent out of four water filled pails then drape poly over it.

I put them in a SGFC in a room that I can keep at between 55-65 degrees. They already seem happier. Cant wait to eat my first homegrown. I had them once from the store and they were great.

Understood. I'm letting those go as an experiment. I learned a lot by doing things like that.

No contams yet. On day 22. The pink color on the pic is not there in person, so no, there isn't contamination. Just a quick question. When doing supplement calculations, is it with dry substrate or hydrated?
For eg. Would it be 4 oz of bran to 3 lb of dry fuel pellets? So it would be like 8.3%?

Yea dry weight. Use metric system, much easier to figure out %, 900g sawdust 100g bran =10%
