Gymnopilus Luteofolius ID?
    #22379489 - 10/14/15 04:12 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hi everyone! I'm brand new to the shroomery as today is my first day on here. I have been researching different types of psychedelic mushrooms and collected enough info to go on my first hunt. I live in North Easter PA. I went hunting today and think I have stumbled upon what I think to be the Gymnopilus Luteofolius. These 3 were growing together on a dead log. It has the textured bumps on the top, the yellow gils which brown as you will see from the pictures. When pinched, as I did on the top of the stem, it turns purple. I did this to two of them (seen in pics). The one has a little bit of a stem that I pinched, it too turned purple (hard to see). I have yet to do a spore print, but just from laying on the paper towel it has left an orangish yellow print. I was hoping someone could confirm my find! I here there's a bunch of experts on here that can help me out. I look forward to some feedback!

Thank you! And as always,

Safety First!

For a more confident ID, place them on white paper or aluminum foil and re-photograph them. You need better photos and more photos. A spore print photo after 4-12 hours of printing will also help.

I hope these pictures will help. The one mushroom that looks dark on the bottom of it is because I pinched the stem. It looks dark on here but is indeed purple. I've taken pictures of me holding the ones I pinched up on the stem towards the cap. You can see it. Its purple and looks purplish black in the pictures. Hopefully you or someone can identify what they are now. I'm working on the spore test right now!

The purple is not visible in the photos. What type of wood were they found on? Were they growing clustered together tightly or spaced apart from one another?

The purple is somewhat visible I think. Look right under where the gills meet the stem, That is where I pinched and you can see it I black/purple. it was more purple when I first pinched it but not it is wilting and you can't see it as good. And I found them on a log, which I am not sure of the kind of wood. It was either maple or oak of some sort if I had to guess. They were close together. I found about 5 within at most 8 inches of each other and some were growing right next to each other.

I'm at a loss here, unfortunately. Give it some time, and hopefully someone can give an ID.

In the meantime, I'll refer to this collection as possibly in the genus Gymnopilus (section unknown).

Most likely. If they are extremely bitter then you have a winner.

Compare with Tricholomopsis decora

Okay I looked up the Tricholomopsis decora, and it looks similar, but it says that it has a white spore print. I just completed my spore print for the mushrooms overnight. I have pictures below. It is a rusty orange color! Does this confirm gymnopilus luteofolius?

Well it rules out Tricholomopsis. The Lightning's answer seems like the best one available.

Like I said, if they have a bitter taste, you have a winner. You don't need a lot of it in your mouth to taste it, they are super bitter.... Like huffing duster ^_^

I just tasted one and it really tasted like cleaner of some short. Very bitter and almost tasted like chemicals is how I'd describe it... Is this proper for these type of mushrooms?

Gymnopilus mushrooms (mostly) have a very bitter taste. So far everything you've posted supports that as the most likely genus.

Thanks Taxa! I've been looking around the web and found some photographs of gymnos that look just like these. I think if it isn't luteofolius, it is some kind of gymnopilus. Thanks for the help!!:mushroom2:

if they are verified Gymnopilus Luteofolius and are on the same level as active Gymnopilus Luteus/Junonius , are they fresh or dried? What kind of experience are you looking for? Have you ever eaten these or any other active species before?

Also, I may be wrong, but isnt dosage advise not allowed? i cant remember...

They are fresh and not dried I picked them yesterday. I don't know if dosage isn't allowed. I just joined yesterday lol. So I'm not sure on that rule. I have ate mushrooms once before but they were dried.

with gyms, its easy to get a good buzz going, they are loaded with active alkaloids. as far as psilocybin goes, they are weak, and to have an experience equal to a psilocybe species you would have to eat many more.  I am not going to tell you how many to eat, but fresh is better because once dried, the already low amount of psilocybin becomes weaker. The best advise you could take is to start small, and work your way up every 20 minutes. For dosage advise, I would reccomend going to erowid.com and doing a search for active mushrooms (specifically gymnopilus) and guage your dosage off the description there, based off what kind o experience you desire. Good Luck, and as your name states...safety first. Dont eat anything your not sure of. happy hunting. :mushroom2:

Wow thanks for the useful info! I did get a good buzz off of these! I don't think I had enough though to really get me too far, but it was good to discover the difference between dried and fresh. Does anyone know the specific gymnopilus? I just want to be sure so I can continue my hunting at a further date.
