Anyone is free to take the information I summarized and the references I gave for what they are worth. Discrediting the source is in this case not a very constructive tactic.
Btw, no Wikipedia was involved.

The data are there for you to see: it coats about as much or even a few percent more than the market value of the resulting pork. Your persistent curiosity about the total costs per pig are easy for you to satisfy by multiplying the costs and market prices per kg of meat by the average weight of a pig ready for processing. I've done my share of homework; if you want to contribute further to the debate on this aspect, do yours.

If it costs more to raise a pig than you can get when you sell the pig nobody would raise pigs.

In 2012 the US bought up over 100 million of surplus pork, but I don't know if its a consistently subsidized sort of thing.

Great post, koraks, though the debate seems to be a little imbalanced between factual argumentation and "I haven't seen it so it doesn't exist" arguments.

Because people are used to the taste of meat. To most people it tastes good, and that's why they eat it. Most people don't think very much, or dwell very much on whatever feelings they have. Most people don't seem to have the capacity to imagine what it is like to be another human being, much less a pig.

Eggs are better protein than meat and you don't have to kill the chicken to get it.

Agricultural subsidies work a little different in the US compared to Europe. In the US, the general policy is to buy agricultural products on a massive scale at a price that covers farmers' costs if market prices drop below this level. This had happened several times already and the tool is applied whenever market situations require it. In Europe, the emphasis lies on export subsidies which are substantial and applied continuously. Given the cost differential, subsidies seem to play a bigger role in European pork production (and exports) than they do in the US, but both use subsidies to keep this industry afloat in its current form.

Actually its not, just because the majority of meat eaters dont watch their diets doesnt mean having meat be a regular part of it is in any way unhealthy. We're designed to process it.

Well I sort of agree and disagree with this one. I am vegatarian myself and I find I am much more energetic. Others feel borderline anemic. Diff people thrive on diff diets. You kinda gotta what works for you

How many professional fighters or athletes do you see that are vegetarian?
