BLG/gymnopilus ID repuest
    #22378081 - 10/14/15 11:33 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I found these on the stump of a cropped down tree in some ones front yard,
Distinct mushroomey scent
Very Bitter taste
Bruising brown/dark
Bright yellow/orange caps, dry, smooth
Bright yellow Stem, tough, 5cm
Gills yellowey brown, close together,

I found some older specimens of the same type further down the road which were much larger and the caps were a dark orangey brown. They smell very similar to cubensis, which I've grown myself, although they're not producing a spore print, possibly because the more mature cap was very dry.

Hypholoma sp.

a lionshare of agarics mushrooms smell vaguely like cubensis, don't use that as a basis for thinking they are active.

Google "Hypholoma fasciculare", you'll find they look remarkably similar bc that's what they are.

they do look pretty similar although
http://www.mushroomexpert.com/hypholoma_fasciculare.html
This site said there was no distinctive odour, them mushrooms I have are strong smelling of the typical mushroom smell but also distinctly fruity, a mature cap I have isnt producing a spore print any idea why?

they are probably just beyond the point of spore production, although sometimes if you put a droplet of water on the cap and take the print under a jar or cup, that helps it along. sometimes they're just too dry though...

also, when I find these they have a definite fruity smell, not sure what that Mushroom Expert description is on about by saying they have no distinct odor.

Thanks for the info! kind of a n00b here, but I've noticed a lot of different types of mushrooms growing on dead woods in my area, is it worth looking for gyms at all do you think?

look for them on buried wood and partially buried wood. And woodchip trails are a great place to look also, woodchips are like fast food for mushrooms.
