The FDA has approved the first 3D-printed drug — Aprecia’s SPRITAM (levetiracetam) for oral use as a prescription adjunctive therapy in the treatment of seizures in adults and children with epilepsy.

SPRITAM manufacturing uses 3D printing to produce a porous formulation that rapidly disintegrates with a sip of liquid, making it easier to swallow.

The “ZipDose Technology” allows for delivering a high drug load, up to 1,000 mg in a single dose, which is expected to help patients take their medication as prescribed. SPRITAM is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2016.

Nearly three million people in the United States have been diagnosed with active epilepsy, with an estimated 460,000 of those cases occurring in children.

This will soon be the future of drug production in general I think. Coupled with the work being done on growing synthetic compounds from modified yeasts etc, it seems inevitable that either individuals, corporations or cartels will soon be printing their own meds/drugs/whatever.

Once these recipes and techniques get onto the interwebs, the big pharma influence and monopoly is going to be in serious trouble, interesting times are just over the horizon. The implications for healthcare in 3rd world countries alone are staggering, let alone the prospect of the average junkie being able to print their own chemicals at home.

One way or another the days of the cartels/pharma companies etc are numbered or due to change massively in the way they conduct their business. The increased momentum of decriminalisation around the globe and these new technologies are going to produce some very lively debates/situations/circumstances.
