Too much shaking?
    #2237610 - 01/12/04 08:24 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Well, I built myself a pmp and made it through my first pf tek. It was a great success (thanks shroomery!). Anywho, I decided to give popcorn a whirl. So I pc it and innoculate and everything is going smoothly. I started one jar way ahead of the rest because I wanted to test the syringe I made and make sure everything was ok. Everything went along fine. It colonizes for a week, I shake it. Let it colonize another week and shake it again. I probably did this three times. Here's the issue, since I dont incubate all my jars take months, not weeks. I put my jars on the furnace in my house, it's the best I can do for now. The jar seemed mostly colonized, but after the last shake, the mycelium doesnt seem to want to reconnect. I can see mycelium on individual kernels, but I let the jar sit for a few weeks to let heal, still nothing. I was just wondering what your opinions are on this matter. The jars that followed I have only shaken once and they seemed to have healed fine. On a side note, those jars seemed to have slowed down quite a bit. They colonized to about 75 percent in 3 weeks, which is fast considering my situation, but they just dont want to colonize the top and bottom kernels, and I am afraid of shaking again. So tell me what you guys think. Thanks

It still should show some growth even if it wasn't getting enough air. My guess would be that after 3+ weeks the jars have dried out.

Perhaps thats it, there is a bit of condensation here and there, but when I loaded the jars I remember the kernels looked pretty soggy. I don't know if this helps at all, but for air exchange i have a hole probably 3/4 of a centimeter with tyvek.

My guess it that they are drying out.

I know this post is a little old, so I apologize in advance. Well as a follow up, I shot some sterile water into the jars. It didn't seem to help. So I guess I just beat the mycelium up too much. I would restart, but I used up my last syringe. Oh well.
