how to quit smoking cigarettes?
    #22375559 - 10/13/15 08:25 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Ive smoked for 10 years. I get bad anxiety w/o them. They taste horrible.

I do have nicotine gum and patches.

It baffles me. I heard it has withdrawls like heroin.

What do I do? I cant afford a e vape.

I cancelled my gym membership.

I guess I need to throw a patch on tomorrow if I really do want to quit.

I chewed once to quit but I dont want my gums to get raw.

i feel the same as zZZz on it. . what you believe is the primary factor to whether you are successful on quitting them. ..  the more you believe you will be successful, the more likely you will be to do so; the more you believe you can do it - the more likely, and so on..  environment is important..

about withdrawals, i would tend to deal with that the same as with any physical difficulty - as much healthful food ( not like, eating as much as possible, lol :sun: but as healthy as one wishes in that direction ). .

drink plenty of water ( a good idea anytime, most important / best time i've found is to make sure early in the morning, etc., after sleep )

so that - to kind of steel yourself and prepare yourself for it. . .

then otherwise -- just grin and bear it, so to speak. . .

maybe even find ways or spend a while on a great show like the IT crowd or something ( i kno, i kno, it comes from ;;;; but it's goood  hehe )

lolz :sun: am laughin at myself a bit, but i mention the laughter part because it releases endorphins. . . also of course - various things,

all the normal ones, pets, etc. . .

believe in your strength - in your success - you will get there; have this type of aspiration.

just some of my thoughts - and. . . tea can be very nice, very lovely and beautiful --

i went back and forth on it a couple times -- caffeine -- 'til i learned of well, it does improve learning and there are some health benefits  hehe. . .

once i ever learn a good fact about a food, or tea, if it's one i always felt was good for me, i stay with that one. hehe

but then -- tea can be meditative. . . like, the quote i had in mind was

' drink your tea slowly and reverently - as though the earth were revolving on it, ' by thay,

and of course the corollary by D.t. suzuki -

'when i drink my tea, who would deny that time and space, eternity is transcending itself?'

( close to correct )

and drinking tea slowly is a nice way - it is kind of a good bridge between a meditative practice of slowness and stillness, and being a stimulant as well.

having plenty of time for rest and relaxation -- also the space to be active in, when one wished, could be a helpful factor;

well that's all i had on it, hehe.  or save up for a vape :sun:  my friend got one of those and is pleased

Hey, man. I didn't read the entirety of this thread and also don't know if you did settle for some method or not. If you're an arguably heavy smoker (a pack a day or something) and are not intending to get off using a substitute, you should gradually reduce your use of cigarettes instead of trying to quit cold turkey.

When I did that I got some constantly rapid heartbeat, general physical and psychic restlessness, in the absence of the idea or feeling of a smoke. While I couldn't just ignore that, nicotine withdrawal is not as brutal as you may think. Your psyche may try to trick you; just don't accept how much fuzz it seems to be when it really isn't. Nicotine is not heroin and is easier to be master of.

So go down six smokes and spread the rest out over the day, repeat a couple days later or something.

Stuff:

If you set rules (pick times to smoke rather than a number of smokes) just stick to them and find something to kill the time in between. Talk to someone on the phone for some time every day (if not a friend then mom or dad, they'll be glad to help and getting to know them better can be worthwhile. If you can't think of stuff to talk about ask them to tell you about what they did when they were in their twenties.)
or cook simple meals for yourself or something; something that doesn't require a mad amount of focus. If you start taking walks, go somewhere; visit a friend that lives 20 minutes by foot away, stay for an hour, enjoy yourself, walk home. Pointlessly doing things is unrewarding. You want a task.

Also, don't talk about how you're trying to quit to people so much. Don't remind yourself of how hard that seems at the time. Don't make it the focus of your thinking. You may also decide to not smoke around the house, making it a conscious and less comfortable thing to have a smoke.
If you go out drinking not smoking so much anymore, watch how much you drink. You might just go for your drink when you would normally have a few puffs.

It would be quite an advantage if you really wanted to quit more than you do not want to, for some genuine reason. If you want to quit for good don't heroically strife for it but find yourself actually deciding against smoking because of something.

Smoking's bad for your blood vessels. Erections work with blood.

Just get off, man. You actually can do that.

Thanks for your tips. I took Majickmuffin's suggestion of buying chewing tobacco.

I really enjoy smoking but I need to think about my health.

My smoking is kinda like my bone spurt on my right foot, feels like I'm constantly stepping on a penny and my foot slants to the left unlike my left foot. I would try running but I can't help but freak out about my bone spurt. I plan on getting a x-Ray to get the foot problem situated.

I really appreciate the help!

Ween yourself off them by rolling your own cigarettes with herbs like damiana and slowly increasing the percentage until you no longer require the tobacco.

That, or just stop buying them.

Cold turkey is the only way.  I have tried weaning myself off or using supposed quitting aids.  Only cold turkey worked.  Chewing gum can help with cravings.  Smoking weed is a wonder for easing withdrawal.  Avoid alcohol for a few weeks because it makes cravings worse.

Also, for every time you would have normally bought a pack, put the cash in a jar instead.  Seeing how much money you save can provide incentive to stick with it.  Maybe set a goal for what you're going to do with a year of cigarette money.

In my experience, quitting smoking is 100% a psychological battle. The more you build up in your mind how hard it's going to be, the harder it's going to be.

That's not to day the physical withdrawal isn't there. But it passes quickly enough. Usually within about a week and your in the clear (physically) the mental withdrawal can last longer. But the good news is that comes and goes. And doesn't last long either.

Normally shows up in response to a trigger. Like times when you normally would smoke. But it generally passes in a few minutes at most. What I will do is just take deep breaths and focus on my breathing until the craving goes away.

Your best chance of success is still to not build it up too much. The less of a big deal you make of it. The less of a big deal it's going to be.

this.

btw, hope all is well rooster.

also, in response to one of your above posts, youre just trading one addiction for another. ok, so u start chewing tobacco which helps you quit smoking cigarettes. but now what? you've picked up a new bad habit in the process.

the only way to quit smoking is cold turkey. I just quit smoking two weeks ago, and have done so two other times in the past, all going about it this way.

find a day where you have the least amount of urges to smoke. I always pick a day where im off of work, and I can plan a day to keep as busy as possible. I usually talk myself through my urges, telling myself that cigarettes actually contribute to anxiety, they cost a shitload of money, how a few people in my family have died of lung cancer, how much my sleep would improve by quitting, etc. and if that doesn't work, ill watch a truth video on youtube with some lady who has a tube in her throat, or people who have had limbs amputated because of the effects smoking has on your circulation.

all you have to do is survive the first 48 hours and in my opinion youre in the clear.

Thanks for the kind thoughts :thanx:

I had about 3 smokes in the past 5 hours.  But I do have some chewing tobacco which has cut the urge and spread out a nice amount of nic to settle my nerves.

I find I'm not addicted to the nicotine but the harmful chemicals they pump into it.  I know it's sick.

I made some improvements of drinking teas.

It is made a big fuss off that qwuitting is very hard because then they can flog you all the other sht, like nic patches, and metal cigs, etc
In actuality it is surprisingly easy and here's how: first off make you mind up. Then be aware that at certain times you will get a particular taste in your mouth when you could kill for a ciggie. I encourage you to get into the taste. be aware of it and don't fight it or be feaful of it because it makes you wanna smoke. Remember the empty feeling you have when you come to the end of a cig. Often with a nasty taste in the mouth as you stub it out.
Understand that smokers STINK!! When you give up your senses will return and you will be able to smell a smoker from years away outside! You will look in bemusement as people smoke and look like chimneys. it looks pointless!

Make fun of all the poses different types make when they smoke, male and female. Do some of them with an invisible cigarette. I do this and it makes me laugh. Would love to see a comedian do it, but haven't yet

Think about ALL the money you will save. get a calulator and work out how much you pay for cigs every month, year

When you stop you may get a little cough. Don't be worried, it means your pipes are becoming pink again and the fine hairs which smoking destroy are growing back, and that is why you have a temporary cough. Get into that image of your precious pipes becoming all pink and healthy again

Don't play games with yourself pretending it is 'harder to quit than heroin' bla bla. That is the propaganda. No, quit and stay quit. first several weeks you get that tast sometimes and you feel the urge --so don't, and then it gets easier and easier

Do some research on the 'master of propaganda' Edward Bernays and how he used mindcontrol to get women to smoke. This is what they do to everyone. SEE through their shit. he also got millions eating bacon in the morning and now they are telling people it can cause cancer! These fkers do not care for anyone but PROFIT!!!
