What's going on in my petri dish?
    #22375484 - 10/13/15 08:13 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I'm a total agar noob folks, so please tell me what I'm seeing here..

I've since taken transfers from the dense, healthy mycelium, but what's up with the wispy/translucent growth?

So it's safe to say it's not mushroom mycelium, but some other undesirable nasty?

I'm not sure if one of those is a contaminant or not. Let that plate go for a while and look for differences as it grows. How long has that plate been going since the transfer to it?

EDIT: I missed the 10/4 date on the plate glass . I'm still not sure what's going on there. Is that two clumps of agar in the pic or did all that growth come out of one clump? Also did you check on that plate daily as it was growing, and if so, when did the bottom part start to become noticeable? It looks like it might be growing a lot faster than the top part.

I did check the dishes daily and all the growth seemed to originate from the single original clump at the same time. The speed at which it grew was my first suspicion.. I took transfers from the healthy looking growth and hung on to the dish just to see how it grew out. (I'll try to post another picture when I get the chance) It has since became much more cottony/powdery.

If you don't have any other plates, you could try to do a transfer from the non-contam part and see if you can isolate it . I have no idea how the contam got in there. It could have been transferred on the original agar, or it could have come in from somewhere else during the transfer. I always do at least 3 plates when I do transfers because my aseptic technique and lab setup are not ideal, and every once in a while some bacterial spots or trich spots pop up out of nowhere after a transfer.

EDIT: If you've got other plates, then just let it go and learn something about the contam. It's kind of fun to watch something else grow.

Transfer from 11 and 1 o'clock now, possibly both are cube myc but I'd take those transfers to be safe. The bottom colony looks very iffy but I've had some similar growth from ms but never a clone.

I'd actually already made those two transfers PinPorn, not much to report yet. It looks like dish got tossed so I won't be watching it grow out after all  :facepalm3:

Here's another picture of a clone taken at the same time. It has that same wispy look, but has grown very uniformly..
