To fruit or not to fruit, that is the question!

So there is still like one or two tiny little bits of uncolonised sub, so it seems.

Now I'm desperate to fruit these, tomorrow will be day 10. Now should I just wait and fruit tomorrow or will these be OK to go today?? I have a feeling I know what the answer will be but I want some more experienced growers input as this is my first grow.

Also, on average, how long can it be to get fruits??

Thanks all, this is so exciting this has been quite the journey

I say wait the extra day to be sure it's fully colonized, so when you introduce the tub to fruiting conditions, it'll be ready to start pinning right away :yesnod:

So I removed the tape, inserted poly, and removed the bag added light etc yesterday. Hopefully we will see some knots soon. Pics to (hopefully) follow.

I've been reading this really interesting thread about casing and fruiting and when to do it etc, here:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22315950

I wasn't planning on casing mine. What's your preferred method?

I always tape up my holes during colonization of the bulk sub, you want to keep those co2 levels as high as possible.

Then when fully colonized, I case with jiffy mix at a thin layer (1/4 inch) and put it back into colonization until the surface is covered at about 30%. Then I remove the tape from all the holes, stuff with poly, and introduce light on a 12/12 schedule!

Can you also wrap a black trash bag around the tub and look at it after 10 days?

The black bag around the tub isn't necessary. Light is actually beneficial to mycelium at all stages of growth. The tub will pin up when it is fully colonized and has adequate FAE!

I used a bag on mine, it wasn't very opaque anyway so most light got through, but my lid was pretty flimsy so I think it was more for limiting GE if anything.

Whatever works for you.

Yeah the lids on most of my mono tubs were pretty loose too. They'll colonize fine tho as long as the co2 stays high at the surface.

Well the tub is taking its time, I'm putting it down to bad genetics or possible contamination. But I think it's just being slow and will fruit when it's ready as it still looks and smells good.

Unfortunately for me tho I have to go away for some time (not prison!!) so I'm gonna miss this baby fruiting, however I have left it the hands of someone to look after her and they promise to take pictures so I will still be able to keep the thread updated.

And thanks for asking ESP

Tub still looks good. Some tubs take longer than others, could be from genetics or perhaps dirty spawn. It's hard to know for sure. That's why you have to get really good at using your SAB to greatly reduce the possibly of a contam entering your jars and slowing down progress later on.

And also, remove the tape from the side of the tub. You want the substrate to shrink with the liner and not to create a gap (which leads to a lot of side-pinning). Better to avoid that, as they are a pain to harvest. You don't have to remove the tap fully, as it is attached to the mycelium in some areas and might damage the sub. Just cut it loose from the sides of the tub.

Too bad you won't be around to see your tub fruit. That's the best part! :awesomenod:

I see what you mean with the tape now Psilo, I'll have to send instructions to the guy looking after it.

And also you wouldn't believe how gutted/frustrated I am that I'll miss the fruiting but hopefully the pictures will bring me some solace :mad2:

They did say they were gonna dry the fruits out so at least I'll have something to look forward to upon my return

Also all my stuff for agar has arrived today so I'm getting onto that as soon as I get back too!!

Cool man! Make sure your friend dries them out with a food dehydrator right after picking. Turn it to the highest setting and come back in 12 hours and they'll be done! :yesnod:

Maybe your friend can take some prints for you while your gone? Then when you come back you can just swipe those on agar and start isolating it to get a clean culture. I've read that taking clones from the second flush leads to weaker genetics..

Again, great advice, thanks Psilo

I think I can convince my pal to do that, he'll be scared tho as I've done lots of reading on here and have a good idea how to go about it, and I know how it can all seem daunting at first. Maybe able to convert him and get him registered on here lol

Also I splashed out and bought an Excalibur :crazy2: my friend is also looking after that

No problem dude :super:

Some cultivators take extra precautions to keep their prints as sterile as possible, but the mushrooms are already exposed to outside air, so it's a bit unnecessary IMO. That's why using agar is such a life-saver, you can take multiple transfers to get a super clean culture from even the dirtiest spore print! :awesomenod:

Basically, just cut the mature mushroom right below the cap so spores can easily be deposited on the piece of aluminum foil you're using. Place a glass over the mushroom/foil to maintain humidity and speed up the process. After 24 hours or so, most of the spores will be on the foil. Remove the cap and place the foil in your dehydrator at the lowest setting for a couple of hours. After that, it's ready to be stored and used on your agar plates! :dancer:

I've also asked him to get me a print so I can jump straight in when I get back,
