Scored a $50 chipper shredder on Craigslist

Just scored a chipper/shredder on Craigslist from a couple that was moving and needed it gone asap. I was a little reluctant because of the price, but they said it ran fine. I know a bit about small engine repair so I thought $50 was worth it regardless. Put some new gas and oil in and it fired right up on second pull. What is the best way to capture the shredded straw? I have seen one grower use polytubing attached to the discharge chute and the other end directed into an IBC tote. Anyone have any other ideas? Pretty stoked to retire my leaf vac.

They actually make factory and aftermarket attachment chipper shredder bags if you want to go that route. Or you can get a burlap sack or onion sack(s) and make one. The other option would be build a solid box built of plywood or pallet wood with a screen top or side. If you have space you can just shred against a plywood board or pallet and some other random logs to somewhat contain the straw. Be sure to wear a good respirator as the dust is not healthy, and of course eye and ear protection.

I used Wal-Mart laundry bags for a while. But cotton seed hulls are where its at. Shredding sucks.

Shredding does indeed suck! Not sure why I didn't think of Walmart laundry bags. I use them for mushroom hunting so I have quite a few. I am part of the "Certified Naturally Grown" network of farmers for produce. They don't have standards for mushroom production yet, but have advised that cotton seed hulls may not qualify for the program if they are genetically engineered (bt cotton). http://www.cngfarming.org/mushrooms CNG has not stated if conventionally produced substrate would matter for certification. How hard is it to find conventional or organic cottonseed hulls that aren't GMO? Any sources for purchasing in bulk? I have only seen them in small bags at feed stores as an organic amendment but haven't looked too hard.

AFAIK there is little to no OG or CNG grown cotton in the US. By and large anything that comes from an oil mill is GMO. It certainly doesn't stop me from using it. But I have no desire to be CNG or OG. I know a grower in missouri that is certified OG and uses cotton seed hulls. It's all about who your agent is and what they think, because mushrooms are a totally different beast than vegetables. All you need to do is say that you really need to use something, then document that you can't find it organically.
Kind of a shame that one of the only countries that grows much of it (certified OG cotton) uses slave labor to harvest it. Burkina Faso, hell of a vacation destination :tounge:

I highly doubt GMO plants would affect the mushrooms in any way. I would however believe some of the pesticides or herbicides may transfer over. There must be some sort of research on this.

I agree that gmo cotton would have little effect on mushroom production. Just part of the whole gmo witch hunt (the only problem I see with them are the patent monopolies and technology be directed at the current system of subsidized commodity production...but that is a whole other thread). I thought the guideline was bullshit like a lot of other guidelines but expected it. However, we are able to get a premium on our produce and set ourselves apart from other vendors having the cng label. Funny thing is that I could use cotton seed hulls in my fields as an amendment and still be in compliance. There is probably a much can greater risk of residual pesticide contamination. Personally, I think organic guidelines end up tying producers hands but the public has become so accustomed to labels. A lot of customers ask for certification. I would never certify through the nop, but cng seemed like a good alternative with 3 other vendors at the market already having paved the path for label recognition. Almost every other grower there claims to be "chemical free", "no gmo", "pesticide free", etc. i know for a fact that several of them making these claims are conventional producers. However, I am able to get about $3-4/lb for heirloom tomatoes while conventional growers get about $2-2.50. The certification for cng is only $150-200 and I know most of the farmers in the network already. There seems to be value in the label as I can charge the same prices as organic producers without having to partner with the usda. I don't think the labeling matters much for my shrooms. People don't seem to care as much, but it definitely helps my produce sales.
