cobweb or mycelium
    #2237420 - 01/12/04 05:32 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

around 3-4 days i noticed something growing, rice grain split open and white coming out... over the weekend i forgot to keep my heater on so the temps didn't get too high. i looked at them and nothing much has grown. i turned on the heater for the past 2 days and when i came home today there was alot of white. only problem is i can't tell if it's cobweb contam or mycelium. the white is growing in the parts that innoculated the jars (1 1/2 cc in each hole) but it might also be cobweb contam growing where the best air exchange is. i'm sorry i don not have a picture.

its really hard to respond to a question like this wthout a pic. Myc and cobweb can look very similar to each other to a newb, but once you see it you'll never forget. There are many good pics of cobweb on this site in the contam section of the grow guides. These are good for identification purposes. The other difference is in growth and color. Cobweb is darker and grayer than the very white myc, and grows MUCH faster! Also cobweb will prodice tiny black dots at the end of its strands.

yeah it happens, if theyre is enough moisture up there. or, even if there is just a large growth on the top below, it will bleed through.

Cool, I won't screw with it then.. out of 8 pint jars this one in particular has growth at the innoc. point, and it's growing on the verm. as well as the brf. Not so much on the verm. though...

that's perfectly normal. mushrooms are going to start growing on something that has no nutrients in it. it'll catch onto the brf and work its way from there. i dont use brf personally (i use whole brown rice) and i notice that it does attach itself to the rice, then spreads from there.

just be patient
