What is potato agar?

Hi there, so I bought some potato agar and some dextrose, but all the recipes I find call for me to boil potatoes and take the broth as well.
Does potato agar mean I don't need to boil the potatoes and can just add the dextrose? Je suis le confused.

Got it from a non sponsor site mushroomsource.ca along with some grains as they were hard to find in my area. No complaints about em by the way. Poured the plates on saturday and realized I'd forgotten the dextrose. It solidifoed really clear... Almost like glass. Put a few drops from a apore on one and a plate with nutriemt agar to test. Not sure if I should junk tue plates or not.

The most common recipe for a potato based agar recipe is as follows:
3.3 grams of plain idaho instant potato mashed potatos 2.5 grams of agar .7-1.5 grams of any kind of simple sugar. honey, light corn syrup, turbino sugar are all recommended.
dextrose is a kind of sugar. the potatoes are pretty obvious... and of course there is agar in your product. it sounds like you have a mixture of potatoes and agar, but it doesn't contain any kind of sugar? so, unless the label on the agar states it does contain a kind of sugar, then you will need to add the dextrose at the proper amount.

It might be worthwhile to see what happens with the plate you've already dropped on. I've read some people saying the dextrose isn't absolutely necessary. Obviously it is preferable and makes a more ideal agar product, but before you throw it out, see if it works at all. You've already made them after all.
You got potato agar, but the site only sells the agar agar, and potato starch is a separate product. Did you mix the potato in already, or are you trying to make potato dextrose agar by using starchy potato water?
It's not really clear what you've done, but since you already made some plates can't hurt to see what happens before you toss them. I'd make the next batch the right way. Write down the steps you need and refer to them like a recipe as you make it to prevent forgetting things.

I got confused because the description of the product says the site uses potato agar and I'm just used to mixing up nutrient agar. So i just used the agar i got when I ordered my grain and water. No dextrose or potato starch. Gonna see what happens on the plate, but I'm not hopeful. Going to order some lab nutrient agar anyhow.

Why are you ordering even more agar? Didn't you just say you have potato agar and dextrose? You don't need anything else.

I'm just gonna continue to make my own agar out of 3 dollars worth of agar agar packets, and 60 cents worth of potato flakes for the rest of the year.

Facial hair must be full, thick, and square. Anything less than that, that means you can't grow it.

It's a cost-benefit thing for me. It'd be a 10-mile round-trip to go to the three places I need to go to get agar, dextrose and potatoes/potato flakes. So time, plus materials, plus gas, plus time spent mixing/weighing everything and boiling the potatoes/making the broth, the pc-ing it then doing the plates. It's well worth the time saved just to spend $30 on nutrient agar, which gets delivered right to my door, makes enough for 250 plates, I know works well and is pretty hard to screw up. Just add water and pc. At the end of the day this little agar experiment has only cost me about $20-$25... kind of a bummer, but no big loss.
I get people like their own methods, but I happen to have more money than time at the moment, so for me, it balances out. I just chalk all this up to paying my tuition at 'shroom school.

You could just use honey or corn syrup instead of dextrose, rather than traveling miles to get it.
