Why do humans like to whack things?

(keep it clean, folks! and let's leave person-to-person striking out of this discussion)
We just love to hit & strike objects. From baseball, cricket, tennis, golf, ping-pong, racquetball, croquet and so on, we get a huge charge out of whacking inanimate objects, even when it is not related to sports or competition. Nothing quite as satisfying as taking a sledge hammer to an old car or a brick wall - it's almost up there with sex. Is it the vibration, the primal anger release or just the plain old love of violent attacks, even on non-enemies and non-prey?

I'm sure it has a lot to do with anger release. At least, it does for me
There's nothing like bashing a flaming Tandy 1000 (soaked in gasoline, of course) with an old iron gas pipe!

See? A closet whacker comes clean. You may be opening the door for others to step forward. I applaud your courage.

Hey, way I see it: better than smashing something that's actually "living", eh

I think the human affinity to whacking is really about percussive sounds. Allow me to demonstrate: Pop!

I admit it.
Old stereos, TVs, terminally fried electronics of any kind, all of them faced my wrath.
stopped doing it to living things at about 8 or 9 when I discovered morals.
part of the human brain is permenantly hardwired to destroy.
I guess its one of our most basic means of contact with our surroundings

nothing beats stomping ice that forms over puddles once the water has drained away from the ice, as sclorch said, it's the sound and it's also that crunchy feel beneath you feet as the ice shatters

You obviously have no theoretical understanding of how the food chain works, Doc.

Our minds are not made as large as truth, nor suited to the whole extent of things; amongst those that come within its reach, it meets with a great many too big for its grasp, and there are not a few that it is fair to give up as incomprehensible. It finds itself lost in the vast extent of space, and the least particle of matter puzzles it with an inconceivable divisibility; and those who, out of a great care not to admit unintelligible things, deny or question an eternal omniscient spirit, run themselves into a greater difficulty by making an eternal and intelligent matter. Nay, our minds, whilst they think and (*****) our bodies, find it past their capacity to conceive how they do the one or the other.

This is a big reason why i like doing sculpture. I can get angry, sad, crazy, and let my furry out on some material or in animate object, and then it becomes something. Minus the planning. But I loved playing soccer, so much that to me it was almost a spiritual activity. Cold, hot, snowy, wet, kicking the shit out of the ball and unleashing furry was exhilerating! I didnt think, i just acted, thats what was so great about it. When im doing something like smashing something, i stop thinking about things, and i start to let them go.
