Help ID plz- PICS
    #2237302 - 01/12/04 04:30 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Hi.

I am in need of help to identify this mushroom that sprouted on my driftwood (in my Dendrobates Azureus terrarium). The driftwood was collected outside (Mississauga, Toronto). Anyway, i have researched and dont seem to find a match. I was wondering if anyone may help identify it.

Its about:
- 1 1/4" tall
- light brown/red on the center of the stalk
- but the top and bottom of the stalk is black.
- the cap is a light tan colour.

Diagram: It shows the first stage which looks just like a nail, and colouration.

Shroom:

For those of you who dont know what a D. Azureus is

Thanks alot,
M.N

hi.
since your circumstances are special and unusual, the regular protocols are not as easily followed... but using macro and getting some clear, close up shots of the gills, stipe base, and the details of color and texture of the pileus, and of course SPORE COLOR! would certainly help narrow it down some. i am interested in species that fruit from driftewood from a successional standpoint... i.e. it is interesting to note which species colonize raw woods 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and so forth. thus particular species can be an indicator of the degree to which wood has been decomposed, thus one can decide how suitable a particular wood might be for cultivation of any given species....

ahhh.
i don't even have a guess without mo info.

Turn your camera off auto focus for your pictures, that will help. If you don't want to kill the mushroom, make a ring out of paper with a hole that fits the stem relatively snugly. Snip a slit in the ring and put it around the stem at the bottom of the cap. Take the print that way.

Hey,

Alright. Ill try to get the spore print. Its going to be hard, because its so small however.

Anyway, how long should it take to get the print? Overnight?

Thanks.

Mitchnast,  No, only in the wild they are.

Yes, some like Phyllobates teribillis can kill 10 humans with only one frog, but Captive bred specimens are harmless. The chocoa indians of SA rub sticks on the frogs backs, and blow them using darts. Thats why their called "dart frogs". How ironic.

That being said, it still isnt the best idea to go licking one of these or something. Unless, ofcourse, your a moron
