Take a look at my pins

So this is my first mini mono tub. It's been about 5 weeks since inoc. I just wanted some feed back here. How big do you think these will end up? And how long?

 Thank ahead of time

not bad for your first mono. i'm guessing you'll get a 1.2 oz dry first flush.
looks like they will be a decent size too. maybe 5"-6" tall
post pics when you harvest them.
ps next time just use a liner if you want to prevent side pins. tape on the outside of the tub doesn't do anything.

There's no way of knowing how big those will get. I see a lot of knots. I think you will do pretty well but you likly wont have defined flushes. I'm guessing you will have fruits maturing at different times. With the right balance of humidity and FAE you should have no issue getting an ounce per qt of spawn.

Did you case? What ratio did you you spawn to? Is that considered fully colonized even with the areas of substrate peeking thru? (Sorry for all the q's... about to fruit and not quite sure myself!)

I used 3 quarts of spawn to half a brick of coir and a quart of verm. I was wondering about the brown spots but I think it is colonized . Damions 5050 btw

I'm using Damion's tek too but with gypsum- 5 quarts of spawn with 1 brick coir, 2 quarts verm, 1 cup gypsum x 2 tubs. Both tubs are at the same point in colonization. While when i stand back and see substrate, it is all covered in mycelium. I think its because I didn't even out my substrate very well.

The surface isn't fully colonised but if it's fruiting that doesn't really mater. I'm guessing you used a top layer of substrate when spawning. When I do that my subs always fruit before the surface is finished colonising. It winds up acting as a pseudo casing layer.

I put a top layer too. The second set of tubs I evened it out and put less of a top layer. Is the top layer not necessary?

I would like to know that too. If I can just mix the sub and casing and let it go that way so it doesn't have the break the top layer.

It's kind of an old method. Moste people just mix there subs evenly these days. I still throw on a top layer from time to time. It really just comes down to personal preferences.

I mixed my substrate and spawn together then took a little of the left over substrate and threw it on top. My understanding is that it helps keep moisture in while it colonizes.
So should I wait a few more days on my tubs or put them into fruiting conditions?

I see then if they aren't throwing the top layer are they more likely to case it before fruiting?

I wouldn't case with a top layer. Without a top layer a casing dose make it easier to maintain good conditions but it's not necessary.

So best way to go next time would just be to mix it all?

I'm not going to say one way is better than the other. It's just personal preference.
This sub was mixed with no top layer.
This one was given a top layer and fruited before the top had fully colonised.
Both methods work just fine.
