Adventures as a Noob

1. After 8 PC runs I just realized my PC can hold 10 quart jars and not just 6. I thought the bottom of the jars had to be submerged in water. At least I know how to properly use my PC, right?

2. Make sure substrate in monotubs is even. The colonization of mycelium in first 2 tubs has been explosive but the uneven substrate is making the process take longer than I would like. Also, there are areas with heavy growth (overgrowth?) just as other areas have just finished colonizing.
3. Oats>WBS
4. Agar is the way to go... it just takes the patience of a saint. I will be making my first wedge transfers today to oats using the new jars I decided to eliminate the silicone injection ports I put on previous jars and just roll with SFDs.
5. When drilling holes in clear plastic expect it to explode unless you drill very very very slowly.
QUESTION: I have been reading conflicting infom about whether to wait for pins or just knots in my tubs once fulls colonized to move them into fruiting conditions. They are fully colonized but with MS to WBS. What do you guys think?
Thanks again for the support and advice. I love my Tuesdays off from work!

I wait for pins but you can fruit at 100% colonisation. It's really just personal preference. The way I see it a little consolidation is a good thing and there's no point in introducing FAE and losing some surface moisture before pins have formed.

Just pop it into fruiting conditions when it's fully colonized. You don't have to wait for knots but you can if you want to. Whatever you do, make sure you ejaculate into your substrate first.

How is this for a spot to fruit? Note indirect sunlight, tubs away from walls, temps 75 degrees near windows, and ceiling fan on high. Also in a room where I can close the door so my dumb cats won't pull polyfil out of holes while I'm not at home.

BTW another noob mistake was 2 inch holes-- Holy moly were they hard to fill with polyfil! Originally these were going to go outside so i wanted more FAE. Second set of tubs have 1½ inch holes.

Would be careful about proximity to windows unless you're higher than the third floor. Also I would be concerned about the fan on high, no where have I read experienced growers say put a fan on high. Have seen many say put it on low. Also the temp at one time during the day might be excessively warm because sunlight may be hitting it raising the temp 5 or 10 degrees. You said note indirect sunlight but (given I cannot zoom on mobile) the tubs are almost as close to the window as possible. Would at least draw the blinds. I used those tall sideways turning blinds in the past to make sure light gets in the room but not on my tubs. Also raising your tubs off the ground will help. I used stolen milk crates in a pinch. And uh I like to wait for knots for fruiting.
Cool thread. Reminds me of me

Thanks for the advice. I have been testing temps around my house throughout the last couple weeks. I used the kitchen to colonize the tubs which worked well because it also has a little nook where they are out of the way, that doesn't get direct sunlight. However, I have animals in my home. My dogs could care less, but the polyfil is a magnet for my cats. The room I moved them to I can close the doors when I am not home so they don't get tempted to investigate.
This is a southern facing window and the door is off a covered patio so direct sunlight never passes through the two windows. I can lower the blinds to adjust but I worry that the room will get too dark. The curtains are black out curtains from when I work grave shifts. As far as raising them off the ground, the floors are wood and there is no real insulation under them. They are usually pretty cold, even when it is fairly warm in the house. I may have a crate or two in the garage... I'll have to go look.
I pulled them away from the windows so air can pass on all sides. I an play with the fan and see how that affects FAE. Since its a ceiling fan, its not blowing air directly onto the tubs but rather circulating the air in the room.
