The only thing that grows here right now...(pics)
    #2237240 - 01/12/04 04:02 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Hi all,

Went for a scroll through the thickets around my parents' house this weekend. Nothing much of interest during this time of the year, except for one nice little species. No idea what it is, but here are some pics. If anyone wants to take a stab at id-ing it, be my guest. I don't have much info on this mushroom; this is all I have:
Tubes: 1-2 per mm, tubes are smaller around the center of the cap.
Habitat: grows directly from dead deciduous wood (oak, birch).
The stem appears to be very, very strong and is socketed very firmly in the substrate. It really takes an effort pulling one of these from their branch

looks like a bland member of the genus polyporous. maybe badius? elegans?

some tuff shit.

common on hardwoods, and the fruitbodies last into the winter.

but i must disagree whole-heartedly.

porous hymenia do not unequivocally mean boletus.

Polypores also have tube-like spore-producing surfaces.

does this resemble your mushroom? :

not boletes.    possessing pores nonetheless.

Hya floccopus, the first two pics in your post are spitting images of my finds, I'm really inclined to think that that must be the same species (or something eerily similar  )

And no, Wiener, they're not boletes, I'm pretty sure about that. Boletes don't grow here in this season and they certainly don't look like any bolete I know to me.

That's a Polyporus Brumalis or Winter Polypore.
