Update!!!

These two colonize faster than the other two (bottom of jars have started to colonize)

And the big jar

There is one strange thing tho...and its happening with big jar. I dont know if its possible to see in pictures but it seems that the top layer which is meant to serve as filter have started to colonize too.

Is it supposed to colonize so close to the top near the dry verm?

I don't know I've only done cakes twice and in the right size jars. Maybe the verm got wet? Still the myc wouldn't really colonize it verm doesn't provide nutrition.

1 week minimum... but I've been leaning towards 2 weeks being better after listening to pasty talk about it.

Had p. much the same problem. Some cakes kinda colonized vermiculite but not really, it looked only like some kind of mycelium roots, not true colonization (since verm has no nutrition, as said above). So anyway, the shit grew through entire verm layer, so I added more verm (out of the package which was opened weeks ago). Worked for me, though later when you dunk the cakes that had verm layer "colonized", wash the verm layer with the "roots", since they have no use IMO. Oh, and, the cakes that had this were birthed and were just fine.
In other words - that's no problem. I think you don't even have to add more verm, let them grow out of the jar, which for BRF cakes should be opened.
The reason of this I think is it's too wet, lack of FAE or something like that, wet verm layer, because if they don't want to colonize lower side of cakes, they're probably too wet down there. I think to prevent this there are two ways: drier cakes in the first place/inoculate lower if possible.
Oh, and, I'm new at this so I might be wrong, everything what I wrote is out of my mind, empirical implications.
Best of luck with your shrooms!

there is no need/reason to add more verm to a colonizing PF cake its fine/normal for some of the verm filter to get colonized just rinse it off when you birth IMO colonization of the dry verm layer is indication of a strong culture

A colonized dry verm layer is probably a better filter than an uncolonized one, all things considered.

I have strong feeling that one of the jars may be contaminated

your not gonna be able to get the big cake outta that jar because of its tapered neck which is why you never see people use the regular pint and quart jars for pf tek. what are your plans for this? It seems to me your best choice would be to break it up with a fork(small as you can) and spawn it to a bulk tray of sorts do you have access to coir in your region?

I know about that big jar.. if you would read trough this thread you would know that... because i already asked questions on how should i spawn it....and i havent seen coir here...but also i havent looked for it. Could i just spawn it in those substrate mixes that are used for indoor flowers??? I could mix it with straw or smth IDK... any suggestions!!!!
Im not sure about that contamination....i have to wait 2 or 3 days to see if its not only like darker verm spot behind mycelium....
