Hello!
I have a few micro - jars and the one looks like it's caking and pinning but found a black spot on the other side of the cake.. This is my first time growing so any input would help!

It is very contaminated! Did you pressure cook them for 90 minutes at 15 psi?

No I didn't, These were pre packed micro jars. I purchased them from Universityscientific.com I've had 50/50 success with these jars. There are mushrooms growing in this particular jar. Do you think I should keep it?

Whoever made those jars really should work on their sterilization techniques.

Make the jars yourself next time. You have to be in control.

Here come the negative vibes. Wth were you thinking? Which tech says to use those cups? What is the foil doing on there? Spend 15$ and buy the correct jars. Why didn't you fill them correctly? First time or not, there is no excuse. There is so much info out there and even videos. Messing up the way you did is inexcusable. Bty, those yellow things are mushrooms. Take care of them and they might mature

I can't wait to see these grow in the hydroponic chamber. I would expect huge yields

Did these come pre-inoculated? No, right?
Anyone ever stop to think that the jars may have actually been sterilized properly but the inoculant\sterile procedures for inoculation were flawed? Running jars through a sterilizer is pretty hard to do wrong and seems silly that so many blame that rather than question the inoculant or procedures.
Man it would suck to be running a business selling properly sterilized substrates only to be bashed when some asshat uses the oven door tek, or better yet the reverse ceiling fan tek(yeah.. remember that one??) for inoculation or dirty inoculant etc. and most if not all of their stuff contams.

I want to say toss it but the optimist in me says isolate it away from your other jars and see if the mycelium will eat it up. Did the jars come with the foil under the cap? How did you inoculate? I know you said that you had success using these types of jars before but it might be time to move up and do the whole process yourself. From what I remember seeing don't these pre made jars cost $7 to $10?

I just noticed that. After looking closer at the kit pic posted by tahoe it looks like it comes that way. Weird.
