Agaricus arvensis. They smell delicious, but are probably made of cadmium. The road is the busiest one in the area.

Also found the fungus formerly known as Lepiota naucina. I've only, ever found it by that road. Do these things live on heavy metals?

Agaricus confuses me. How do you know those are A. arvensis?

Large, white but yellow staining, double ring, growing in grass, with pleasant odor (not the metallic type smell Agaricus can have). I'm not up to date on Agaricus taxonomy, so I'm using the name in a wide/provisional sense. Given the habitat, A. silvicola is a well established species that could also fit. I don't have the experience to distinguish them other than by woodland/grassland location.

The yellow weathering on these is rather pronounced. If I find more and have time I'll investigate further.

It would be interesting to see the intact partial veil on your mushrooms.  I don't know if its a defining characteristic that would separate A. arvensis from A. silvicola, but I wonder if yours have the same pronounced cogwheel pattern?

I should admit that I've not seen A. arvensis in the flesh.

Where are you located?

I'll walk by that area again today. Maybe there are some young ones. I picked the mushrooms in the picture for printing/cloning and the veils got damaged with rough handling.

This is the lower New England coastal plain. They are quite similar to a type common in the mid-Atlantic. In Georgia I lived near an actual horse field where the yellow staining "A. arvensis" type was much more slender. I forget what its veil looked like.

So my Agaricus search yielded something:

Don't think it's Agaricus.

Also not Agaricus:

more in the pot:

Cool discussion.  :strokebeard:

Though, I'm afraid that I have nothing of importance to contribute.

I've never tried hens.  They seem to be pretty popular, and most of the time that means they're pretty good to eat. No need to parboil these first?

I've always just cooked them straight.

I passed an already harvested clump today, so hopefully I'll be able to find more.
