Syringe to WBS, do you shake after inoculation?
    #22369119 - 10/12/15 04:29 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

So, last year I shot up about a total of 20 quart jars, and I never shook after I shot. I would get 2-3 points of germination that were no more than an inch apart.

Fast forward to 5 days ago, when I shot up 6 quart jars with a syringe and decided to shake after inoculation. Today I took a peak at those jars, and each jar has 5-6 visible points of germination all around the jar. That's so much better!

I will now always shake after I shoot WBS. I just thought I would share because I don't see this discussed much.

I like the shake myself also with MS. Sometimes my syringes are near clear. Its not a super shake more like a spin of the grain.

I see though that there is some conflicting opinions. Prob cause its cubes they just grow.

You could do it either way. One might get faster colonization by shaking after inoculation. Germination time will be the same.
I do it both ways for no real reason. Unless I am testing a new syringe. I will inject in one spot on the glass. Then watch for contamination.
Keep in mind that the mycelium grows three dimensionally. On theory it's better to aim towards the center of the jar so that the mycelium will not be hindered by the glass/bag. I will aim for the center of the bag when I inoculate. I may not see mycelium fit two weeks if I do not shake the bag because it's growing on the center of the bag

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I shake after PCing to even distribute moisture. I don't shake until 30% colonized after inoculation. I liked to aim all my LI on the side of the glass so I can clearly see what starts to grow. At 30% I shake to spread my inoculation points.

I wonder if thats why I like my shake.

Wonder if inoculating in the center and pulling up as I do to be the best(course if clean).

I like to give my jars a nice roll around. not sure exactly how much it does because on my current jars there's a streak down one side of myc where the water ran down. I like to think it helps a little though but I have no real reason to think that.
