I was watching Alton Brown dry his herbs in the coolest way...

He takes a regular box fan and 5 furnace filters. He layers his herbs on the filters, stacks them on each other and bungees the stack to the fan.

Turn it on and wholla, in 24 hours your "herbs" will be bone dry.

Yeah I love that show as he explains the science/kenematics of cooking

He has also done a show on cooking with grains and covered at least 10 diff types of stuff that I thought would colonize well, I have yet to try any tho :wink:

I saw the same show last night...

it's a good idea, but it does have a few problems when it comes to shrooms - mostly having to do with the fact that shrooms are 90% water while herbs have much less water content. Also shrooms aren't flat like herbs... it is a damn cool system though!

I actually have a little automated drying system I made up with a short trip to Safeway, Lowes, and Radio Shack. It works *really* well - I'll be posing a tek about it later today.

I think this old post may be of some interest to you .

The Jebus Dehydrator Tek.

It is rather easy to modify this slightly to make them stackable, certainly not as easy as furnace filters but it works.

I just use a standard food dehydrator with the heating element disconnected. It came with eight stackable levels that allow for a good quantity to dry at one time. It takes 24-36 hours, depending on how much you're drying. I have dried up to a wet quarter pound at one time.

I can also reconnect the heating element between flushes if I want to make apple chips.

I have already done this!

When all I needed to dry was a small box I cut a hole and held the box in place against the wall with the fan, POOF an easy drying method :smile:

I used paper towles in between, but I like just throwing everything in a rumbermaid container and putting the fan above better.

But for Salvia etc etc......I like the box :wink:
