Compressed straw the bomb!
    #22367755 - 10/12/15 11:35 AM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I just changed source for my straw due to excessive wheat seeds in my previous bale. So i went to the local tractor supply and picked up three bails of compressed straw. They weigh 50 lbs each and are $10 ea. They are wrapped in plastic which makes storage in my shed easy and clean. Upon opening i realized they are pre shredded! Totally worth the extra cost considering how messy and time consuming shredding is. I just wish it was organic.

Great idea. I'm all about ease when it comes to getting the job done so these are awesome. How many 5 gallon buckets do you think you could fill with one bale of this?

That's really exciting! Because it's chopped I was thinking it'd work great for doing a combination of pasteurized straw and pasteurized hardwood fuel pellets in buckets.

Good find!

I was thinking about trying some wood pellets in the mix for my blues. If i do ill let you know how it comes out vs plain straw. I can tell you one thing the straw really needs a 1-2 day soak. I tried 6 hours with soapy water and my bags are 1-2 lbs lighter than my other bags i soaked for two days in soapy water.

Last time I was TSC I didn't buy the compressed bails and went some where else. I didn't realize it was all ready shredded though. I'll have to remember that next time I need some straw.

What I've bn using for months love it makes it so much easier no shredding just add alfalfa and pasturize. It is also so much easier to store and takes up less room than the bales I was using

I just use a little but it has increased my yield and the seems to produce a longer lasting healthier mushroom . It also as sped up colonization times by a day or to

It's straw pellets - that bag hydrates to 7500lbs of very finely chopped dense straw.

I chopped 3 bales of those round things with a tractor chopper last year but the cut was no where near fine enough. If you can get them pellets are expensive but worth it in storage space reduction.

I've just started using straw pellets a while ago & have had some luck with them. How do you prep your pellets?

curse you solarity it seems all the straw pellets in bulk are mainly a european item, maybe i just need to search deeper. There is always the option of buying a few round bales and going to a pellet mill for a custom order, i know some in the north east do this for landowners with their own trees. I did however find some cool bulk delivery companies that hook up to your house and pump your bags full of wood pellets.

I've been considering using alfalfa, but I've been reading some of Buckeye's threads and it seems that they cause the logs to overheat in the warmer months.  How much do you supplement?

someone get me one of these:  a pull behind straw pelletizer!

I've got thousands of acres of wheat within 20 miles of my farm.  Wonder what they run new?
