Recommend what kind/caliber of gun a gun noob should get
    #22364477 - 10/11/15 05:24 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I've got some money burning a hole in my pocket and an interest in having a decent "end of days" stash. I've done a little bit of reading into the different calibers and am leaning for .22 at the moment. Mainly because their ammo is cheap, low recoil, and quieter. .38 special sounded like a good choice too but I didn't want to start with a revolver.

I'm also leaning for a handgun. Shotgun would be next on the list but handgun seems like a good starting place  Walther looked like a decent quality/reasonably priced brand?

I've heard conflicting opinions on whether big calibers or small calibers are better. (obviously its dependent on the situation) Some say big calibers tend to go right through people without doing much damage, while smaller ones will ricochet around inside and get the job done that way. Others say bigger calibers have more "stopping power." It would be nice to be able to stop attackers without necessarily killing them, but when you're already using a gun..

Some nice informative links would be much appreciated. I was having trouble finding straight information not bogged down in 2nd amendment pro gun agenda BS.

are you wanting something for plinking with or is it going to be a self defense CCW weapon also?

is plinking just practicing at the range?

this will be mostly for the shooting range I suppose and also a "just in case" self defense weapon.

You should start out with a .22 rifle. Reasons are, low cost firearm, low cost ammunition for getting lots of practice in, and its safer than a high caliber for people who are not experienced in choosing a proper backdrop. When you get good with that, upgrade to a .22 pistol. Then you can get into shotguns and high caliber rifles. Join your local shooting club etc and your new friends will let you shoot their guns so you can make a more educated and experienced decision. They will also give you lots of good advice and safety tips.

thanks! its going to be interesting to make some 'gun friends'

hadn't even been thinking about a rifle but it does sound appealing now that you mention it.

any handgun up to 9mm will have cheap enough ammo to plink with.

If you were going to use it for a self defense weapon also, I would recommend getting at least a .32
if not a .38 or .380.  these guns are small but the technology in bullets has really advanced.

a revolver is always good for beginners.
but you will soon want a semi auto.

I say skip the revolver and go for a ruger .380 LCP or a S&W shield in 9mm.

If you're gonna be getting it as a just in case for self or home defense, .22 is not what you want. 9mm at the minimum for that.

.22 is for cheap target shooting and small game/pest control.

Also ammo may be cheap, but you need to make sure it's readily available around you, and stock up when you can find it cheap enough. .22 is one of the first rounds to disappear during ammo scares, people buy the shit up and then sell it for ridiculous fucking prices online.

For home/self defense use hollow points. May go through them, but it's not gonna be clean.

I would never put my life on the line with a .22 honestly. I wouldn't want to get shot by one, but I own a .22. No way I'd want to rely on that shit for anything. I don't even keep it loaded because I would never really view it as a viable defense weapon. (My 9mm and .45 stay loaded unless I'm heading to the range)

.22 is really that weak that you'd say its not a viable self defense weapon? huh.

I guess I just got confused by the whole 'ricochets inside the body' deal.

.22 is a very, very viable defense weapon, you just need to be a good shot first. I used to poach deer with a .22 rifle, but i can stick it in their eyeball at 40 yards. .22 is the CIA's weapon of choice because it is powerful enough to enter the skull, but not exit, it will bounce around in your cranium and turn your brains to scrambled eggs. The problem is, most people are not accurate enough to hit someone in the head, consistently at longer distance so people tell you to get a .45 because it will blow a 2 inch hole in your kill zone and knock you on your ass.

Yeah, I wouldn't trust it. The slug is tiny as hell, and a bullet doesn't act like flubber or something inside your body. It may not travel a straight line (if it gets deflected off of bone or something) but it's not really gonna be bouncing all over the place or anything.

I'm sure there's some expert marksman out there who would use it reliably to defend themselves by making highly accurate shots to critical areas, but I'm no expert. I doubt there are many people who have the capability to effectively use such a round in a defense situation. The majority would probably be doing good to stop someone with a 9mm or .45

Yeah Ruger is a good manufacturer. If you stick to cheap ammo and well known gun makers you can't really go wrong. It's usually personal preference.

springfield xds 9mm is a very common good gun
glocks are always good though I don't like them that much
FN makes really nice guns but they are expensive.

the FNX Tactical .45 is a dream gun of mine.

pay like 300$ for an ATF license and you can get a silencer if that's legal where you are at

I looked that up awhile back, you still need the same permit you'd have for a regular silencer.

it can be legal for civilians to have a silencer? weird

I suppose I don't know what goes into this "atf license" though.

Yeah, depends on state though. Good luck getting one in Cali or something (they might not even be legal there).

Basically you get a background check, have to file all the right information, pay a tax, have the thing registered (it's non-transferable unless you're selling to someone else already approved) and you have to do it every single time you get one. It's not just a one time thing where you get approved for one you can go buying a bunch of them.

I haven't done it but the people on my gun forum talk about it all the time and it's obviously a huge headache, takes a long time to get done, and they are anal as hell about the paperwork, the slightest thing wrong it starts the whole process over again.

EDIT: I think part of the paper work is getting like the police chief of your county or something along those lines, to sign off on it. Without their approval you won't be getting it. So it even depends on the county or city you live in.

I can't believe no ones suggested it but 9mm's are great guns. 9mm is a very cheap round so you can put alot of them through at the range. At home its a strong enough weapon to take down almost any intruder. .22 is a cool gun but very weak you'll grow tired of it pretty quickly. .38 calliper is a good gun but close to the size of a 9 and more expensive ammo. Only other way I would go from a 9mm is a .45 which is a solid weapon but the ammo will be noticeably more than 9mm.

.45 is not the best gun for someone wanting to do target shooting, ammo is expensive. 9mm ammo can be reasonable, and it can be a reasonable defense weapon. It really all depends on the gun though. A gun that jams all the time is not a good choice. My SR45 will only reliably feed WWB ammo. Aguila and other cheap shit, I'll get a few FTF's per range trip, and some of the really cheap Wal-mart shit will literally be every other round.

My wife's M9 on the other hand, will chew through any ammo at all, I think out of like 800 or so rounds, it's had 1 single stovepipe jam.

Yeah my uncle has a massive collection of silencers which go to like 5 different guns. I believe he has 3 pistol silencers and 2 for his AR-15. They are expensive as fuck and he had to go through the ATF licensing to get them. He basically has a federal firearms license are whatever you call it. Not sure about needing one for each gun I think you just need to pay a fee to register each silencer because they are treated almost as individual weapons. The laws here are super relaxed though. I think Arizona has some of the most lax laws for guns.

The guns are so quiet you can shoot them inside your house it's pretty cool.

9mm. With good ammo it will be very close in effectiveness to a 40 or 45.

I recommend a SR9C. Great gun, runs about 420 bucks. Comes with a 10 round magazine with pinky extension (allows you to grip the grip with 4 fingers vs 3 on a gun with a small grip) and a 17 round mag that has a grip extension built in essentially making it like a full size sr9 grip (not like the glock extended mags where the metal part sticks out the bottom of the grip). With the small mag it's concealable without much trouble and with the large mag it essentially a full size gun minues a .7" shorter barrel If you want a versatile pistol that packs a punch on a budget this is the gun to get.

You can get 9mm for ~230 a thousand so it's really not that expensive. I would not choose a 22lr for personal defense. While they may kill you in time they do a poor job compared to the larger calibers at stopping you quickly, which is the whole point of shooting someone in a self defense scenario.

As far as bigger calibers punching through people... not true with good defensive ammo. Most good defensive hollow points for 9mm and up pistols are designed to penetrate 12-16" which is ideal. Bullet design is about balancing expansion (larger wound) and penetration (reaching vital organs). FBI calls for a minimum of 12" of penetratration which is plenty imo. With pistols 380 and under you should really stick with fmj bullets as they often don't have enough energy behind them to expand a hollow point while penetrating adequately. Comparing full metal jackets... any pistol 380 or bigger is gonna punch a hole through someone and keep going. To give you an idea 9mm HP's generally expand to .55-.6" while 45's generally expand to .65-.7 both with similiar penetration so they are pretty close in effectiveness.

Yeah that's what I meant, each silencer has to be registered, not each gun it's on. People pick out silencers around the entire idea that they want to be able to use them on as many of their guns as possible since it's such a huge pain in the ass to get.

Single shot bolt action .22. They are always fun no matter how long you've been a shooter. You can always add a scope too.

I'd also recommend a single shot break open shotgun in either 12 or 20 gauge. But I'd really recommend a 20 gauge. Both are inexpensive and always good to have in your collection.

You should be able to get a good used .22 and shotgun as mentioned above for  around $300 combined.

I like 9mm's or .40's for everyday carry.  on a typical day I leave the house with my sig 40 or my glock 9.  revolvers are nice for beginners and are generally accurate as anything.  personally I would start out on a .22 rifle like some have suggested, if money is an object.  me personally though,j I would just save up say $700-1100 for a nice .556 AR.  a four year old could accurately shoot a well built AR just as easily as a 40 year old adult could.  the .556 is big enough to efficiently hunt animals with or effectivly take down a person with, too.  and at the range you can't ask for anything much better than well-built and sighted in AR.

i spent considerably more than that on my rock river arms AR 15 but man was it worth it.  if I was hungry, the world fell to shit, i had a dozen enemies wanting to pop my melon, or I just wanted to go run shit at the range the AR is my default go to.

the ammo isn't that outrageous, either.

anybody that is recommending a .22 is right out of their mind. its too fucking tiresome to find bulk quantities of the shit right now.  and really who wants to only buy 20 rounds of .22??

.380/9mm is the correct place to start.

I built up my supply like 100 a day  Fucking stupid Academy limits and no bulk boxes anywhere. I've went shooting a few times so I think I'm back down to somewhere around 800-1k in .22

Unless you can reliably find bulk boxes or want to make daily trips to the store and only shoot like once ever 2 weeks, .22 is not the best way to go right now. Around here you can't even go to multiple stores and buy it, because only one store at any given time ever has any at all.

.22 long's are notoriously accurate even the cheap walmart .22's.  and generally they are cheap and when you can find the ammo it is among the cheapest.

and for animals no bigger than a big jack rabbit a 22 would have no problem at almost no reachable range.

I do love my .9's though.  out of all of my handguns though the sig 40 i have is my fav.  i've had 5 sigs of varying calibers and while all of them were ace this current 40 I have is best, sig P224 .40 s&w.

i definitely paid way more than OP would want to though

i also have a 1902 s&w .32 long hand ejector.  that gun is accurate as hell, so well balanced and its like shooting a pellet gun.  its my least noisy gun i have.  it would be a great beginner gun but these particular models get pricey at times.  its the only revolver i own now

Suppose I'd better shop around and see what bullets are available near me. Didn't foresee that being an issue.

I warned you about it on the first page.

9mm is probably your best bet for cost effectiveness, ease of use, and availability. .22 is substantially cheaper (a box of 9mm is around 12 bucks or so here, and .22 is around 3-4) but the availability can really fucking suck sometimes. It's been a long time since the last ammo scare (where it all but disappears) and things still haven't really recovered around here.
