Recommend what kind/caliber of gun a gun noob should get

I've got some money burning a hole in my pocket and an interest in having a decent "end of days" stash. I've done a little bit of reading into the different calibers and am leaning for .22 at the moment. Mainly because their ammo is cheap, low recoil, and quieter. .38 special sounded like a good choice too but I didn't want to start with a revolver.
I'm also leaning for a handgun. Shotgun would be next on the list but handgun seems like a good starting place Walther looked like a decent quality/reasonably priced brand?
I've heard conflicting opinions on whether big calibers or small calibers are better. (obviously its dependent on the situation) Some say big calibers tend to go right through people without doing much damage, while smaller ones will ricochet around inside and get the job done that way. Others say bigger calibers have more "stopping power." It would be nice to be able to stop attackers without necessarily killing them, but when you're already using a gun..
Some nice informative links would be much appreciated. I was having trouble finding straight information not bogged down in 2nd amendment pro gun agenda BS.

are you wanting something for plinking with or is it going to be a self defense CCW weapon also?

is plinking just practicing at the range?
this will be mostly for the shooting range I suppose and also a "just in case" self defense weapon.

You should start out with a .22 rifle. Reasons are, low cost firearm, low cost ammunition for getting lots of practice in, and its safer than a high caliber for people who are not experienced in choosing a proper backdrop. When you get good with that, upgrade to a .22 pistol. Then you can get into shotguns and high caliber rifles. Join your local shooting club etc and your new friends will let you shoot their guns so you can make a more educated and experienced decision. They will also give you lots of good advice and safety tips.

thanks! its going to be interesting to make some 'gun friends'
hadn't even been thinking about a rifle but it does sound appealing now that you mention it.

any handgun up to 9mm will have cheap enough ammo to plink with.
If you were going to use it for a self defense weapon also, I would recommend getting at least a .32 if not a .38 or .380. these guns are small but the technology in bullets has really advanced.
a revolver is always good for beginners. but you will soon want a semi auto.
I say skip the revolver and go for a ruger .380 LCP or a S&W shield in 9mm.

If you're gonna be getting it as a just in case for self or home defense, .22 is not what you want. 9mm at the minimum for that.
.22 is for cheap target shooting and small game/pest control.
Also ammo may be cheap, but you need to make sure it's readily available around you, and stock up when you can find it cheap enough. .22 is one of the first rounds to disappear during ammo scares, people buy the shit up and then sell it for ridiculous fucking prices online.
For home/self defense use hollow points. May go through them, but it's not gonna be clean.
I would never put my life on the line with a .22 honestly. I wouldn't want to get shot by one, but I own a .22. No way I'd want to rely on that shit for anything. I don't even keep it loaded because I would never really view it as a viable defense weapon. (My 9mm and .45 stay loaded unless I'm heading to the range)

.22 is really that weak that you'd say its not a viable self defense weapon? huh.
I guess I just got confused by the whole 'ricochets inside the body' deal.

.22 is a very, very viable defense weapon, you just need to be a good shot first. I used to poach deer with a .22 rifle, but i can stick it in their eyeball at 40 yards. .22 is the CIA's weapon of choice because it is powerful enough to enter the skull, but not exit, it will bounce around in your cranium and turn your brains to scrambled eggs. The problem is, most people are not accurate enough to hit someone in the head, consistently at longer distance so people tell you to get a .45 because it will blow a 2 inch hole in your kill zone and knock you on your ass.

Yeah, I wouldn't trust it. The slug is tiny as hell, and a bullet doesn't act like flubber or something inside your body. It may not travel a straight line (if it gets deflected off of bone or something) but it's not really gonna be bouncing all over the place or anything.
I'm sure there's some expert marksman out there who would use it reliably to defend themselves by making highly accurate shots to critical areas, but I'm no expert. I doubt there are many people who have the capability to effectively use such a round in a defense situation. The majority would probably be doing good to stop someone with a 9mm or .45

Yeah Ruger is a good manufacturer. If you stick to cheap ammo and well known gun makers you can't really go wrong. It's usually personal preference.
springfield xds 9mm is a very common good gun glocks are always good though I don't like them that much FN makes really nice guns but they are expensive.
the FNX Tactical .45 is a dream gun of mine.
pay like 300$ for an ATF license and you can get a silencer if that's legal where you are at

I looked that up awhile back, you still need the same permit you'd have for a regular silencer.

it can be legal for civilians to have a silencer? weird
I suppose I don't know what goes into this "atf license" though.

Yeah, depends on state though. Good luck getting one in Cali or something (they might not even be legal there).
Basically you get a background check, have to file all the right information, pay a tax, have the thing registered (it's non-transferable unless you're selling to someone else already approved) and you have to do it every single time you get one. It's not just a one time thing where you get approved for one you can go buying a bunch of them.
I haven't done it but the people on my gun forum talk about it all the time and it's obviously a huge headache, takes a long time to get done, and they are anal as hell about the paperwork, the slightest thing wrong it starts the whole process over again.
EDIT: I think part of the paper work is getting like the police chief of your county or something along those lines, to sign off on it. Without their approval you won't be getting it. So it even depends on the county or city you live in.
