Update- Second Batch Spawning to Bulk

Moments from spawning my second batch of jars to bulk. This time I used oats and Malabar MS. I inoculaed these jars 16 days ago. I am boiling my 3rd batch as we speak for the Argentina MS I isolated on agar and now will transfer to oats. The first batch of jars was WBS and nearly all of the tubs are colonized which I spawned to bulk 7 days ago. I am so stoaked that I should have fruit soon.

How would you compare the prep time from oats and wbs? I am currently using popcorn and wanted to try wbs but the setup seems brutal.
This seems accurate? http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21121313

I started with WBS and while it wasn't difficult per-se, but decided to go with oats the second time around to see if it would be easier.... and I was almost shocked by how much easier oats turned out to be.
I chose to rinse and soak the WBS for 24 hours but not simmer it all. It wasn't necessary, my WBS got plenty of moisuture from the soak. After inoculation with 0.7 ml of MS per jar, I saw growth within the first 2 days. They were fully colonized within 2 weeks (15 days).
I did not soak or rinse the oats. I simply boiled them for 90 minutes with gypsum. The oats came out of the PC pretty plump, but absorbed the remaining amount of water in the jar overnight and became very plump.I liked that they were very uniform and one color. I inoculated them the same way, but with a different strain. Same schedule, fully colonized with 2 weeks (16 days)... probaby would have been sooner had I not shaken them as early as I did, but I am easily excitable.
So to answer your question, prep time for oats was MUCH easier. 1. WBS required many rinses. 2. After rinses, it took some work to adequately dry. 3. WBS made a mess with the small grains. 4. I had to soak the WBS overnight and didn't need to with the oats. 5. I had a hard time differentiating healthy and unhealthy growth in the WBS jars due to lack of uniformity in color and size of grains. 6. Both have provided me with two batches of good jars. I think so long as you use a SAB and good technique there is little difference between the two as far as rate of colonization.
Hope this helps.

And yes, that is the Tek I used. Athough, I used gypsum in mine.
Oh BTW the oats were soooooooooo much easier to shake than the WBS...That shit was a nightmare.

Thanks for the update! I will be trying this as soon as I run out of popcorn. Is there a certain brand I should look out for. Like how people do with wbs. To make sure it's not coated or something.
Searched the forum for oat fruiting results and it's pretty good.
As for gypsum, I haven't used it before I'm guessing like a teaspoon or so for the boil?

Just go to any feed store and ask for whole oats. I got a 50# bag for $13. So long as it is intended as feed, you will have gotten the right oats. Here's a pic of my bag.

Also, if you look through my pics you can see multiple stages of growth with both WBS and oats. You will see why I like the oats better.
I added a pinch per quart to keep it from sticking while boiling. I don't think you can add to much when it is boiling because it will be drained. I know some people add gypsum after boiling buy I worry about muddying up my grains.
Also, I strongly recommend getting a large stock pot that can hold over 6 qts so you have enough room for boiling oats with the extra water. They absorb a lot of water.

I just finished up spawning the 12 jars to two 70qt tubs. Man, I love the oats. I just realized I accidentally used regular mouth quart jars this time around. I'm not sure how I overlooked that since I bought all 36 jars at the same place and thought they were all wide mouth. Luckily the oats came out without much hassle.
My kitchen is being taken over by tubs! On the left are my nearly colonized Golden Teacher monotubs and on the right my newly spawned Malabar monotubs.

I have been considering moving the tubs outside when t is time to fruit simply because the conditions been pretty incredible and I think I might get better FAE out there, but after a week of these guys hanging out in the kitchen, I might scrap that idea and move them into the other room that has great window light and cross room ventilation.

I wouldn't used the crimped oats. They have to be in the hull and I have a feeling that the steam process removes the hulls. Really though, you are over-paying for your oats if you buy oats meant for human consumption. Do you have a local feed store? If so just ask them for whole oats for your horse. They will know what you mean but might be confused as to why you only want one bag. Lol.
Also I miswrote to boil for 90 minutes.... last time i think I ended up boiling for 45 minutes. This time, I accidentally mixed up my times and set my timer for 90 minutes but about 60 minutes in thought "OH SHIT! I'M SUPPOSED TO CHECK MY OATS!"
Some of the oats busted out of their hull after 60 minutes, but they otherwise look fine.
