White Woolly Amanita

Hi I don't have a camera, but I was out earlier picking puffballs and found a white amanita on my way home. It was covered in a woolly substance it looked like a melting cloud, I could see its warts through the wool, and it had a ridges on the stem. I have found both deathcaps and destroying angels before I am pretty confident it is not one. Anyone have any ideas or seen anything like the description. location: Ohio southeast

Was it covered in Spinellus fusiger or maybe some kind of Hypomyces?

It was not Spinellus fusiger I have seen this before. I have never notice hypomyces before that was fun to read about but none of the pictures were similar to what I had seen. I wish I had a camera It was very beautiful and apart from being unique to anything I have seen looked natural. It was symbiotic with pine. I may see if I can find a camera and head back to see if any others pop up.

I went by it again today all of the woolly stuff was gone just a big white amanita. Anyone know a way to identify it as muscara alba over a destroying angel? I normally leave white and brown amanita alone. This still has warts and is very thick the destroying angels I have seen have been petite.

I wouldn't eat any Amanita personally.

Since the active compounds are different I am interested. The last time I ate some I didn't prepare them properly from what I read they must be toasted and dried for full effect. I ate them mostly raw but boiled some anyway the first hour and a half I was fighting off illness then I fell asleep and awoke on the back end of the trip with flash visuals and muscle failure. I want to play with them a bit more until I get it right. I am hoping the golf balls(ovum) I found today will emerge bright red or bright yellow. Hell I would be happy with a caesarea cause they are suppose to be super yummy. Amanitas don't scare me I generally stay away from ones I am unsure of the honey mushroom look alike frightens me more.I end up leaving most amanitas, but vibrant ones are pretty unmistakable. Not that it isn't a good idea to stay away when your unsure there are many species I will not eat or even attempt to identify because I need to pick up a nice microscope. The picture of Amanita thiersii looks like it could be an immature one of what I found if that fur is just part of ovum this thing must have been the size of a football before it poped.
