Pursuing your long-term goals 1

I know a lot of us joined this place at a time in our lives where our major goals were set for us: get good grades; earn your degree; don't get arrested. For me, it was freshman year of university. These days, many of us are past that point in our lives - the point where there's a giant checkered flag somewhere down the road, a definitive "finish line": HS diploma, college degree, first job, marriage.
So, we're forced to come up with our own goals.
For me, I've always wanted to learn a second language. I took three years of spanish and 2 of german back in my hometown, but i can't roll my R's and german was a "easy" class, so neither stuck at the time. In the years since i left for school, i've "began" learning languages more times than I can remember: -DOwnloaded a ripped version of Rosetta Stone's Turkish program -Bought Pimsleur's Chinese course -Berlitz German book (hey, maybe i should try one i already know a little of?!) -Introduction to Japanese
Obviously it's hard to self-motivate. It's hard to schedule out the time, consistently, that one requires to actually develop something. But, it can be good if you can figure out how. I recently dove back into German, about 2 months ago, but this time decided I'd look on craigslist for a personal tutor. $40 for 90 min once a week and it's just the level of accountability I needed in order to keep me on schedule. If i bojangle on my studying, i'm wasting money: the perfect incentive.
SO, two months in and I've already learned about 100x more than I did in my two years of highschool german. This post is to inspire you to take up your dreams, to set a long-term goal for yourself, and to walk the arduous-yet-fulfilling path of achievement.

Yeah goals can be hard to stick to. With languages I feel like living in that environment can really help you learn something fast. You could mimic this by watching german language based movies. I have watched several spanish movies and though I don't speak it I can understand more then I thought.
Also something else to ponder is how much you actually need to learn. 6% of everything you say is the word "the". Learning the top most used words in every day language would be very advantageous to mastering a language. These are the top most used by ranking. The is most used then each one is half as used as the following.
The of and to a in is i that it for you was with on as have but be they
You obviously need to know a lot more then this to speak a language but this would help you be very fluent.

As far as I recall, there about 1600 spoken words, once learned, will let you communicate 99% of ideas. When I was into making languages, I used this list to create them.
I can understand mostly everything in spoken german, and if I can't I know how to use context to ask what they mean. I can't really understand legal german though, so I hire an immigration lawyer when I need to at the VISA office. However, when I run into someone with a thick Berlin accent, its like I don't even speak german at all. It can be that gnarly.

-I'd like to give having a family and being a husband another shot
-I too would love to learn another language. I began using Rosetta stone for French years ago and found it incredibly effective. I just never stuck with it :/. You inspired me to start again ASAP
-Id like to create a new album(this would be my third. It's been an 8 year gap)
-Id like to save up money for a down payment so I can buy my own house and stop renting
-id like to travel the Mediterranean

wouldn't the important part be to learn the instance of how nouns are used in a specific language...there are such major differences from English in that respect.
but i don't know, whatever, i'd love to learn another language.
French, German, Japanese, Greek...anything would be cool.
it's all important to the development of English anyways (save Japanese).
long-term goals are called long-term for a reason...you fill your time with achieving something, only to have it be replaced by a new aspect of what you were trying to do earlier.
that's long-term achievement. it's pretty fuckin' important.

Depends on the language. However, in my experience in Germany thus far no one expects you to speak it perfectly their jaw drops if you can however as long as you are understood Germans don't REALLY care You can build good friendships through a combo of German and English they call Denglish.

Memes, awesome thread. glad you're learning a language. I think that is awesome.
I'm about to start Italian classes again on Tuesday. and this thread inspired me to watch a documentary in Italian (although I could barely understand anything, it was cool just to listen to Italian again).
I'm pumped to get back into learning a language; I just wish languages came easier to me... I prefer the language of maths

i'm sure even plenty of young German's opt for Denglish sometimes.
but yeah, it's not a particular hard language to speak...just one that's difficult to fully comprehend, in writing, and in reading. the speaking part is the easiest part, i think.
like i can speak some Japanese, but do i know wtf i'm saying...not nearly even a single percentile. i know Arigato, and that's it. that's all i've nailed, memory wise.
oh and Gomen or Gomenasai. so there, 0.1%. i know how to apologize for fucking up and then to thank anyone for understanding my horribleness.

Unless you are in the country where no one speaks english Pretty much the minute a german detects you are not native, 80% of the time they just automatically switch to english your brain does a barrel roll and you just start speaking english it can be annoying but it is a good time saver.

I gotta ask... what's the point in learning a language if you don't encounter people that speak that language? I mean I get the appeal but it seems like you'd have to constantly be practicing it once you learned it to retain the information.
Though it would be cool to go to forums based in another country in a different language.

-Cut toxic people out of life (family) -Buy cute stuff -Learn 3 programming languages (currently python and C) -Refresh French, learn German OR Japanese, or both! -Join the three programs in place for getting a job in chemistry & combine with education. -Quit all drugs, yay.
For Japanese I use: Manga-University (hardcovers) Tofugu (best blog ever, very intensive & talks about living in Japan aswell + the JET program) https://twitter.com/animechat_jp (4 words a day) &various ebooks

Job prospects, travel, shit on people in games in their native language.

good thread
right now just focusing energy on small goals -
in order - - get stronger and make some of my bigger climbing goals happen. Go back and finish unfinished business, and put up more first ascents.
- pay off cc debt and rebuild savings
- build that subie I've been wanting for years. (wrx wagon)
big goals -
- after spending a few years on the road and travelling and hopefully saving some money, start saving for some land to build on.
After looking at them in front of me, they're all super reachable. climbing goals will probably be the toughest to nail down cause I'm a bit of a dreamer.

It's been a while since I set any goals for myself. Kinda sad being almost 27 and all but meh whatever.
I think my biggest goal is like Masked's... to save enough money for a down payment on a house and stop renting, and start renting out.
I'm pretty fluent in Russian since I lived over there for the first 9 years of my life and my ma and gram still speak it on a daily bases so that helps me keep up with it greatly.

what do you do for a living? there's probably some good uses for your second language, if you decided to meld that with your profession somehow.
