I installed Debian 8 on an old asus netbook. Made a network install usb and had no problems.

I like linux mint with cinnamon desktop. mint and unbutu are more user friendly than debian.

Does your netbook's hardware support 64 bit? If not, use a 32 bit version. I have installed Zorin and like it. There is a full version, a light version and an educational version available. Use Rufus to make a bootable USB drive with the o/s of your choice and you should be good to go.

Its pretty straight forward installing linux. I had Kali linux and #! dual booting on a netbook for quite a while. ran pretty good.

I have used mint, debian, unbutu, and slackware. slackware was the hardest to install and configure.
