ID Help Please (Panaeolus cinctulus / Panaeolus subbalteatus?)
    #22359803 - 10/10/15 04:08 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Hi all,

We have a yard with freshly laid sod (about 30 days old) and these guys are popping up. Any idea what they are? They do not bruise blue, as far as I can tell, so they may not be active. Figured it's best to stop by and ask the community experts. We're in the Seattle area. Thanks!

You should spore print them on blank white paper or aluminum foil.
The prints you want are PURE JET BLACK.
Post pics with them and people can help better.

They do resemble them and it is the right habitat, but Idk much so wait for a TIs word and take mine with a grain of salt.

These were identified by an expert at the Puget Sound Mycological Society Mushroom Festival happening in Bellevue, Washington as:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panaeolina_foenisecii

Anyone care to confirm? Are these essentially valueless?

You would need to print them to distinguish between foe and cinct.
Foes has a more brown print, cincts are pure jet black.

Those gills look pretty dark and foes usually have lighter gills, but I am by FARRRRR from being an expert.

They are not valueless, they play a role in the local ecosystem and are a beautiful mushroom.
