Ghetto polyfill lids (made with bottle tops)

Hi everyone,
Have read a lot on the site and wanted to contribute something myself. This will be my 1st post. I did a search to see if someone else already had made this but couldn't find it so here it goes.
Things needed: -Bottle tops from any/most kind of bottles -Silicone -Drill or soldering iron or hammer & nail etc -Empty (food) jars -Poly-fill (from pillow / stuffed toy / dog bed filling)
 Use any kind of bottle
Cut the bottle top off from under the ring just below the top.

I couldn’t find the saw so I used the soldering iron to melt it off I also melted holes into the tops using the solder but a drill or whatever else works too.

Apply silicone to the edge of the ring and put in onto the lid of your food jar (I sandpapered the lid for extra grip.) I used lots of silicone so there is a lot of surface to hold on to on the bottle top as well as the lid itself. Let dry for a day.

When I made this the first time I was sceptical about how well the lid and the bottle top would hold but its quite secure although i don't apply too much pressure when i screw the tops on at the end.
Once dried drill holes into the lid through the opening of the bottle top. If you don't have a drill a hammer and nail could work or a screw to puncture the lids and prying it.

Now fill the lid with your poly-fill and place the lid onto the bottle top

Let me know what you think.

Soda bottle plastic won't hold up to sterilization well.

You're over complicating things.

Over complicating things? Can you explain?
The reason I didn't want a single hole with polyfill is because this way there is more Gas Exchange because of more holes and the polyfill doesn't (really) get in contact with the mycelium like when it does with one hole.
Plus it's easy to replace the polyfill if needed
I've PC'd them several times now with no problem.

I like the idea of being able to just put a ball of polyfil in there and call it good don't have to worry about rolling the polyfil and feeding it through a small hole or the bottom getting stuck in lid after inoculation(I've had this happen) that's why I only put my holes in the center now. But as previously stated I don't see this holding up after too many PC cycles. Another thing is I don't have 200 plastic bottles laying around and don't feel like going dumpster diving.

I personally prefer the "old fashioned" way....

a lot less time consuming and don't have to buy silicone or worry about the lids failing in the PC and ruining my work...
There is nothing wrong with being innovative... just don't think they will hold up very well in hi temps.

My guess is if you've 200 jars on the go then you wouldn't be looking for the ghetto approach anyway. If I were to grow on a larger scale I'd probably get SFD lids too. But for now for the few jars I'm experimenting with I find this pretty cool.
But this isn't meant to be the best new improvement on a lid tek but i tried it and it worked better for me than the single hole. Perhaps the silicone wont last too long after PC'ing it a lot. The plastic definitely will (The tops of bottles are thick plastic and I've PC'd them enough know they'll last)
