Random shit in my coir
    #22358997 - 10/10/15 12:36 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

So lately I've been finding a lot of this in my coir

Seems to be seeds of some type, haven't really looked to make sure its only the hull but since I picked these and probably missed a few out of a single brick, would these still have enough nutrition to open me up for contams?

Coir is very resistant to contams no matter how you prep it, I doubt a couple of seed shells will make a big difference. Next time get better quality coir. I'm about to order a big block of coir from amazon. It's the kind that is usually sold at hydroponic stores, it's called coco-tek.

It's eco earth so its pretty good quality. Coir is very mold resistant however if you happen to drop some random grains in it you will grow mold from the grain and it will spread.

I dunno if it's just a hull if it will support growth or not but the amount I found in one brick concerns me.

That's a good point. From the pic, it looked like just the shell, but why take a chance. I've heard a lot of people say that Eco earth is full of stuff like that, I mean it is reptile bedding after all. That's why I suggest moving to a better brand made for only potting use.

If you were to UTFSE and search "eco earth" you'd find very quickly that this isn't an isolated issue, and you're lucky that's the worst you've found.

Seed hulls are mostly cellulose although it's not exactly rare to find whole seeds in coir either. Pasteurization kills most mold spores so the risk is minimal if you avoid cross contamination and the number seeds is low.

Probably would yes.  Exo terra is reported to be pretty clean.  They sell it as "plantation soil" I think though.

I found a whole plant in one of my bricks the other day roots and all. Eco earth does have alot of junk in it.
I used to order those big ass bricks from eBay and hydrate the entire brick then dry it out. It never had junk in it but was kind of a mess and a hassle doing it that way. I prefer to just use eco earth and pick the sticks, leaves and seeds out no big deal.

Every single brick of Eco Earth/Zoo Med I've ever prepped had random things in it. Usually rocks and seeds but people have found tons of crap. I switched to Exo-Terra and have no complaints!

It's great, the bricks are sometimes weigh a little different but you'll have that. And yes, make sure you buy "Plantation Soil" not the "Cocoa Husk"

I personally like exo terra more, but it's 5 bucks a brick
at my local petstore compared to 8 for the 3 pack of eco earth.

I've never had any serious issues, but i have had sprouts and seen
a lot more scraps in it than exo terra

Maybr if you use a really high spawn ratio it not a big problem but i had way more issues when using eco earth. The consistency of it is also shittier. If you like to case with coir as I do, this seeds/hulls junk in it is a real problem.  I personally prefer to not have seed or sticks or scraps of wood. The wood is almost a bigger risk for trich than the seeds are.

Don't you mean eco earth? Exo terra was the one you recommended I thought?

3-pack for $6 on Amazon. It says "Add-on item only", but if you buy $25 worth of just this coir it definitely ships.

If you notice them take them out but I'm sure I've missed a few in the past but it's never caused a problem. Of more concern is if you use coffee grounds, (anyone still doing that?)
The stuff I got from starbucks had some whole coffee grains in it that somehow escaped being ground. That is far more likely to cause trich.

The bricks in my sig are less compressed than the eco-earth I used to use, you can easily cut what you need from the block and break it up by hand, which, as I only knock up 4 jars worth at a time 200g is not too tiresome. Recipe I use:

into a bucket put
200g coir. broken up.
60g  verm. mixed in.
970ml boiling water poured in and stirred.
20g gypsum
put the lid on and let it steam while you have a coffee.
Add the 20g gypsum, stir and break up any clumps. Jar up.

I use brewers grade gypsum it's relatively expensive but a 1 kilo bag will last an age, and is worth it rather than have the hassle of breaking up plasterboard.

I can see how it would be more a problem in a casing layer.

How's the consistency shittier? I've noticed Eco Earth bricks get kind of muddy when trying to do a normal pasteurization, at least compared to the loose coir. I assumed that's from the extra coco peat mixed in which acts as the binding agent in coir bricks. If you're telling me there are other brands that come in bricks that don't do that I'll most likely try it next time I order some.

Exo Terra is just shredded coco fiber and I find its texture far more consistent through each brick and between bricks. Its fluffier too once prepped and not pressed quite as firm so easier to break apart and hydrates evenly when using the bucket prep. Very rarely will I find a stone in it. Never the crap I found in the eco earth bricks.

I had originally used Exo Terra for my snake and chameleon habitats so when I started growing mushrooms I stuck with it. Was only last year that I tried eco earth and I really hate it. Still have a 3 pack around that I doubt I will use for anything but bottle subs.

I mostly use hydroshop coir for my substrates and its definitely coarse. But its clean. I prefer pet grade for casing layers and use it mainly for such.

Bricks def differ even in the same 3 pack. One will be a great deal of fiber and compressed to all hell and the next will basically be powder and can be totally broken up by hand alone.

I'm a bit obsessive and use a piece of hardware cloth (3/8 -1/2 inch mesh) to screen my peat moss and coir and get the crap out of it. If you attach the hardware cloth to a wooden frame and make it the size of a plastic tote or small mortar tub (the black ones they sell at Home Depot for about $9 work great) it takes very little time and effort to screen the material.
