Chicken scratch for spawn

Has anyone tried using chicken scratch (feed) for spawn? I searched and found a few threads on the subject. It seems like it should work fine. It usually contains a variety of grains. It does have cracked corn, which I've read conflicting opinions on. Why is cracked corn so bad?
I know there's a consensus of WBS being a standard for spawn. I'm just curious because I raise chickens, and I usually have scratch on hand. It's around $8 for a 50 lb bag, not that the price differential (if any) really matters.
Any input? The plan is to spawn to a coir/verm monotub.

The starch from the cracked corn can make it really sticky. For the record scratch isn't so much a feed as a carb booster to help keep them warmer during the winter months. Not really mushroom related but wouldn't want any cultivators that are also chicken keepers thinking they can save money on feed by giving them the $8 a bag scratch instead of the $12-20 layer feed.

Yeah, scratch grains are more so treat or supplement for chickens. Our chickens are free to roam and forage, but we do keep layer available for them as well.
Thanks for the input. So it's the starch then in the cracked corn that makes it undesirable. Interesting.

Yea, makes it sticky, it's basically akin to burst grains in your jar. Some people have had some success with using 100% cracked corn, but I think it involved a lot of washing. I'd rather spend the extra couple of bucks and save myself the prep time. Time is money, many people fail to factor that into their cost.

I just started using oats for spawn. Pretty pleased so far. They prob have it where you buy the chicken scratch. Whole oats is what you are looking for...I bought the "producers pride" brand. About $15 for 50 lb...cheaper than rye and easier to work with than WBS.

I used to use that brand until I went to a "real" local feed store and found whole oats grown 10 miles away (I live in a small town) for $9.75 for 50#

at my loacal feed store i asked for what grains they got. they busted out some scratch feed but their milo or sorgum looks fantastic and their whole oats look so similar to rye berries just more paper skined compared to ryes ricey skin. the oats where 75 cents a pound and milo was 50 cents. i thought id add onto this old page.
