Got a new harddrive today
    #22356544 - 10/09/15 09:27 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

Old one still works but I think it won't last too much longer, maybe a year but performance has dropped extensively.

Anyway, I have the new drive up and running and copying all my old shit off, Once I'm sure everything is off of it, I'd like to do a format and use it as a back up drive to back up my files. how does this work (It's on an external enclosure). The back up is only 1TB the new one is 2TB, does this pose a problem? I mean other than the obvious that if I have 1.5 TB to back up, it's going to be an issue, but do the two drives have to match?

What exactly does this back up do? Is it just like system restore for personal files?

In all my years of using Windows, I've never been able to get Backup to work. It either saves everything and I can't get it reinstalled, or it just won't save because of unknown/random errors. So I just cut-n-paste files from one drive to the next, or reinstall things from their original installation files and hope it all still works.

I've heard about some "Ghost" program that is supposed to be the best, but have never tried it, and can't remember what it's actually called. :frown:

Windows backup (I assume you're using Windows here) can be a bit buggy and also backs up all of your system files. Backing up system files is great if you're  a gamer or someone who uses advanced program installations but for the average user it just fills your backup with crap that you could just re-install with a Win disk. Personally I use Acronis for Windows machines, but there are other free ones that work just fine. I've been recommending Comodo and EaseUS though it's been a little while since I've researched it properly, I don't know if any better ones have come out.

I mostly just meant the windows backup, I don't really feel like getting a stand alone program for it. But if it's buggy I just won't take the chance with it. I don't have a ton of stuff, the biggest inconvenience would probably come from getting a favorites list for my browser that's like months out of date or something because I forgot to regularly back it up.

Most of the data I keep on my computer at all times, never really changes. I've more or less been keeping the same files for the last 5+ years. I mean right now I have a bunch of TV shows that I haven't watched yet, but getting all those back isn't really that difficult so if the worst happened and they weren't backed up, it wouldn't be an issue.

I've already formatted the drive and put everything on it.

And damn I love a fresh install. Last time I did it was probably over a year ago and things are running so damn smooth right now.

Screw Windows mate, just install a nice easy Linux version. New distros like Mint are so easy and friendly for ex-Windites. Your machine won't slowly self destruct or randomly pick up malware either.

My six and seven year old kids have 0 problems with it. My wife who couldn't get her head around Debian decided she iked Mint better than Windows in just half an hour. Now I don't have to spend my weekends cleaning up tech issues at home either :smirk:

You don't have to install any programs as everything you need for general desktop use is already installed. Browsers, players, torrent apps, photo editors, you name it... already there. When you click on the system update it updates all of your software with one click. So easy.

I'm gonna stick with windows for the time being. 7 really isn't bad. Once it gets old enough to be obsolete I won't be using Windows anymore though. They're just cratering these days.

Yeah, 7 is the best Win desktop OS yet.

You could try running Mint as a live disk. Basically you can boot from disk and try it out before you install it. It can also install next to your Windows installation if you ask it to, so you have the choice of which OS you use when you start the PC.

Your PC will run much faster on Linux, I guarantee it.

Why would you use a failing hard drive to store your backups?? Just crack the thing open and harvest the magnets.

Because I barely had the money to cover the new drive I needed to replace it with. It's still working, I don't want to base the idea on my shit being totally backed up on a harddrive I had to replace, but it's better than nothing if worst comes to worst. With any luck, I have a feeling that by the time this one craps out and I have to recover all that data from the other one, I'll be able to afford two completely new drives.

Fair enough.

Have you played with hard drive magnets? I want to weaponize one against ferrous objects that I find offensive by smashing one to dust . They're powerful, but brittle.

Nope, but I just looked up what kind they are and I know they're very powerful. Larger ones can sever fingers and shit.

Also: Newer drives use stronger fixed magnets than older ones. As the manufacturers have added platters and increased RPM, the mass and acceleration of the heads have increased. Force is mass times acceleration, so they need a stronger magnetic field. It's cheaper and more reliable to beef up the magnets than the electromagnets.

Something to keep in mind, I guess.

mumble mumble
