I am almost finished and just wanted to show off my work This project has been a long time in my head, now manifested into my reality. This is an 8x16.
So, I started by pouring a perimeter pad, and tapconn'd a bottom plate, then just started the framing. Framed with 2x6's. Pre-stained with australian timber oil (mahogany flame). This stuff is awesome, looks great and completely seals the wood and protects the wood from the sun as well. Here it is with the building inspector.

After everything was framed I did a second coat.

The skirt is sided with T1-11, and here it is after the roof was installed and skirt sided.

And here is an inside view. You can't tell it from this picture but I've got the glazing up here. I used 1/8" acrylic for the glazing. The gutters and rain barrel have also been installed. You also can't tell from this picture but I did the floor with pea gravel, about 4" worth. This weekend I'm going to put up a counter and do the exterior trim. So, I'll post more pics maybe by Monday.

Update: Here are some pictures from today

I added a 55 gallon drum of water last night. It's sitting on it's own concrete pad that I had poured before I ever realized I was going to build this around it. You remember the building inspector. Anyway, I look forward to seeing how this stabilizes the temperature. I have a feeling it's going to help a lot, especially since the lower half is insulated with 6" thick insulation.

I've got the trim painted, drying now, should be able to start trimming tomorrow.

All hail the king of this ethnobotanical jungle!

It's classy, big enought for many plants, and the fact that is adiacent to your house will result in a decent solidity. You also have a window facing your plants now! Good work, keep posting pics

Brilliant effort - I envy your woodworking skills. What do you intend to grow in it?

Well, this is an invention born out of necessity to house my cactus collection. Last year it rained a lot and my trichs got weeping rot as a result. This is a much more idealistic situation for them. But I also intend to grow salad greens, edible mushrooms, and other food stuff. I also want to build an aquarium for aquaponics. I want to become more self sustaining and I envision a cycle of growing mushrooms for food, using the spent blocks of mycellium as food for fish, fish produce nitrates for plants, all of which feed me and hopefully maybe even produce a little income too. I badly want to quit my job or at least go part time. If I can produce my own food, and generate an income I should be able to do that. Build my dream first, then create my dream job. I interviewed for a position as a lab/production manager at a fairly large mushroom farm close by as well. This too would be a dream come true, as I would be doing what I want to be doing. I think I'll get the job, but they have to amp up production before they can afford to bring me on. Until then, I will continue to hook up televison for the mindless masses
As for an update on progress I picked up the trim last night. I also got the flooring and paint for my new mycological space. So, tomorrow I'll be painting, and installing flooring. Too much rain to do anything outside this weekend.

Hey, brilliant ideas. I put my cacti into cold frames in the winter - we are frost free here. And you have a lot of space for all your great plans - good luck with them.

Awesome! You really went all out there. I like it!
-------------------- One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. 'Which road do I take?' she asked. 'Where do you want to go?' was his response. 'I don't know', Alice answered. 'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'
