Gymnopilus junonius?
    #22355558 - 10/09/15 05:41 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

The habitat concerns me, I spotted these near a stop sign on the woodline which backs to a farm. so I pulled over snapped a few shots.  It was dark but the photos looked promising so I grabbed them and did not dig to see if they were growing from wood. I first spotted these last Sunday while driving by so these are very mature. No noticeable bruising. Spore printing now.

They look like gyms to me - now if I could only smell them - though it varies in intensity they all seem to have a fruity but somewhat metallic odor to me - wait for a TI

Thanks, I taste tested and they are bitter, smell is sweet and mushroomy.  Here is a shot of habitat if that helps my phone was on a weird night vision setting when I took them.  Any input is appreciated I have been hunting for 3 years now and I'm hoping it will pay off soon.

Hey guys could I get a TI to show me some love?  This would be my first "official," find. I want to be 100% sure before making tea tonight.  I can post more pics with a better cam if that would help.  I left them overnight in fridge and will look for blue/green bruising when I get home.

Stopped by on my way home to inspect habitat and they are indeed growing from buried wood.  I also found a cluster of pins, have I finally found them?

I know of no other species than Gymnopilus junonius (=Gymnopilus spectabilis) that this collection will match.

Note that this genus has its tricks for identifiers. Mycologists are still studying it. The more info that can be gathered on every collection, the better, I think.

The sample size can be very limited. One mushroom (the size of Gymnopilus junonius) is more than enough.

If you're truly interested, I'd email the lab rep here and get the specifics: http://www.alvalab.es/

Thanks again I sent an email for info and saved a sample.  Now to the good news, these were indeed active and extremely potent.  They showed no signs of blue or green bruising but they did bruise black/dark brown. So again it seems blue/green bruising is not always an indication of an active species. Awesome, clean experience overall, my buddy and I have never laughed harder.
