A true veil is not visibile in this collection so far. Instead, an annular zone persisting of what appears to be mostly rust orange spore deposits and hyphae is present (from the once-visible veil connecting the stipe to the pileus).

According to the Gymnopilus monograph by Hesler, I believe this belongs in "SUBGENUS Gymnopilus: Veil absent, or present and fugacious, not forming a persistent annulus."

I know keys suck, and this one is definitely primitive. If you can spend a few minutes going thru the key, I'd like your feedback on where you end up.

I am not colorblind, but I'm not sure if it is blue bruising

In Gymnopilus adult specimens the bruising tends to be greenish-blue, but green dominant. Primordia can take on a more obvious bluing. I see none in this specimen.

I don't like that key. Nothing really matches up very well.

It's better than nothing, but yeah, it kinda blows.
