You can try it but don't get your hopes up. By this point the mycelium is worn out and the nutrients are used up. You will likely see mold before fruits.

Yeah fruiting chambers dont stay very clean. I would put the myc on agar first so you can make sure its clean, or to clean it up.
You'd be better off taking a clone and using agar, or taking a spore print.

That makes no sense. I guarantee that any mycelium from a spent cake you put on agar will grow mold and bacteria. It's not the fact that the cakes are dirty that's going to keep it from working. The substrate gets spawned and fruits in open air. Every substrate is covered in contaminant spores. It's the fact that the cakes are spent. The mycelium is to week to outrun or fend the competition.

Yes it will, as will it grow mold, etc when placed on any medium. Which is why you need to use sequential plates to clean it up. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11468913

I believe they are just talking about cleaning up new cultures on agar....
Like stated, once the cake is spent the mycelium is so weak the contams outgrow the mycelium.
MudaFuka knows what he is talking about.
Growing outdoors or burying spent cakes is totally different than indoor grows.
Outdoors in the ground you don't even have to pasteurize or sterilize the substrate.
Though I am not 100% sure, but I believe this is due to beneficial microbes present in the soil.

Contamination isn't an issue outside because of all the fresh air. There is also a lot more real estate outside. So each organism can find its own niche.

as i recall these were several year old threads and one of them did it as a goof and was surprised to see some shrooms had popped up.
so i don't think it would make a reliable technique, and a lot of luck is involved. on the other hand all you have to lose is some spent cakes.

It totally works. I toss a lot of my old subs outside and get fruits. I pulled some pretty nice lions mane from a trash bag full of old subs that I tossed in my back yard. My compost bit is always full of cubes in the summer.
