Has anyone here ever tried doing standup?
    #22351452 - 10/08/15 06:49 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

How did you start, where and how did you find places to go to do it? I've been looking all around my state for open mics since you clearly aren't going to be paid or get booked just starting out and there's only so many comedy clubs and most don't do open mics.

Anyone who tried it have any tips on how to get started? I have tried writing jokes and probably have a few hundred written down in a small notebook but the closest I've ever got to performing them was in a conversation with a group of people if the topic fit one that I wrote, I usually get laughs that way but I need to perform them for an audience and learn how to deliver them properly when it's a one way conversation/story because that's a totally different ball game and much much harder to accomplish to a group of strangers who don't know your personality.

Most people go to open mic nights to start out I think.

Ask Vandango.

I've already PMed him but he hasn't signed on in 4 days, I know I'll have to do open mics but I can't even really find a place that does open mic nights, and every comedy place I have found that is even close to me doesn't do them.

Worst case I would travel far to do it because it's something I have to attempt even though I know I'll bomb hopefully only at first.

I dunno what they're called, but what about those places that do like weekly talent shows or whatever?

I know I shouldn't be picky but I feel like I would destroy my confidence in doing it if I tried at those types of places, because they perform any kind of talent I believe, where people who go to a comedy show, even at open mics, know what they're hearing is jokes and they came to laugh. People who come expecting to laugh are easier to make laugh than people who don't know what you're about to do and they came just to see a show and not particularly to laugh.

I mean worst case I really will do that and just keep trying, I just feel like it's a different type of atmosphere when people came specifically to laugh as compared to just seeing any kind of show.

I probably should  I feel like once I bomb I'll get over my fear of bombing and develop a fuck it type of attitude which IMO will help my stage persona much more when you aren't as nervous about fucking up. Doing that might actually end up being hilarious to the people there and work out even better, especially since the people singing are probably awful.

Look at it the other way though. If you can get that audience laughing their ass off when they didn't necessarily expect to, you're pretty good and that should build up your confidence better than at a comedy club. I doubt you'd be the only stand up person there though.

That's actually a really good point, didn't even think of it like that. I've always been a class clown and been told I was funny but I was never specifically trying to be, I've had an obsession with standup for literally as long as I've had memories and it's really the only form of entertainment other than music I really really enjoy and has been my dream since I was in my teens to do myself, I really just gotta build up the confidence and I feel like my IRL personality would be perfect for it if I could just act myself while performing the jokes I've written.

World needs more good stand up comics. I love it probably as much as you do. Haven't watched much of it recently. Seems like most of my favorites are either dead or just aren't really doing much these days. I think the last time I saw a special pop up, it was Christopher Titus.

I'd be afraid to lol, I feel like the delivery is the most important part and reading them either won't make sense or won't let me display the type of exaggeration I'm going for so it'll just sound fucked up, plus that's why I'm so desperate to do them on a stage because I know they aren't perfect and I'll need to polish them up by finding out what works and what doesn't and touching up the dead spots

:undecided: hope van is OK I know he was having a rough time lately.

I would work on a routine on your own before going to a club.  the open mics I know of require that you bring a certain number of people in then they give you some stage time.

Well that would suck, I'm the only person IRL that I know that enjoys stand up like that and I don't think I could get anyone to go with me especially to open mics.

I have all the jokes I would need for a set (hopefully they work anyway), I just don't know how to open especially because most of the jokes I like and the kind of comedy I like isn't great for opening lol, it's the type of stuff you'd have to build up to rather than start with. Plus I gotta figure out how to segue into them all because when I write them down they're usually random thoughts I get and most aren't related in the subject.

if it sounds funny on txt im sure it will be just as funny irl

maybe u can try performing them on ur own and then writing it down just as u performed it?..

i think it makes good practice either way

Well since I haven't perfected this one I'll just explain the premise of it.

I was at the mall when I randomly felt something tugging on my pants, I turned around and it was like a 9-12 year old telling me he didn't know where his mom was, out of no where this lady runs up to me yelling at me saying "STAY AWAY FROM MY KID WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING"....I was confused so I stared at her blankly and just responded with "listen lady, if I was going to abduct and fuck a kid, it sure wouldn't be that ugly ass child of yours"

While writing it I know it doesn't sound that funny lol but my notebook is at my work and that's one of the most recent ones I wrote because that really happened apart from what I claimed I said back. A pedo joke probably isn't the best joke I could of showed you but as I said, I like dirty comedy

A few I can remember, some aren't even finished, but IMO have potential so I wrote them down and know I can add more to them.

So there's this black guy I know....well he's the only black guy I know....which is why I felt the need to say black guy, figured It make me sound cool or something.

I was walking my dog and I saw a dad and 2 of his younger daughters....literally all walking not saying a word and just staring at their phone...made me happy about social media, helps us stay connected.

You ever know those girls that weren't hideous but weren't exactly pretty when you were younger, then you don't see them for years and somehow they magically turn into like a 12 out of 10, I found this girls facebook I haven't seen in years, I was just scrolling through her facebook like holy shit I used to know her she was hideous(act out like you're staring at a screen and start jerking off, then stare at a random girl in the audience and ask if she wants to be fb friends)

I swear tv makes people stupid, I had some friend trying to convince me about aliens coming here and basically being the answer to anything ancient people did, and everytime I'm just like, "seriously dude, lets not open up this can of retard, it's way past it's expiration date."

I used to be so self conscious as a kid, I'd be in a locker room at school like taking a piss and I'd go into the stall trying to avoid pissing next to someone, and some asshole just yells out "you got a little dick I can tell by the sound of your piss hitting the water"

These are all the ones I can remember off the top of my head, if you think they suck feel free to be honest since I kind of need honesty if they suck.

Kinda hard to really gauge them. Almost anything can be funny if it's presented right and the exaggerations are right. You definitely need to find some ways to elaborate more on them. One liners generally aren't that great. The real reason the comedy greats, are great, is because they tell stories. Just listening to some guy stand up there saying a bunch of one liners gets kinda old. It can be done, but you've got to have fucking amazing jokes to do it.

Comedy is an art. You can't take a square inch of a Picasso and declare it a great piece of art. You have to see the whole picture to appreciate it and judge it appropriately.

I think you have a good bedrock to build on, but you've really gotta start building. You need to learn to weave all this stuff together. Comedy isn't just about making people laugh, it's about keeping them entertained and interested, which is why one liner comics usually fail.

Yeah I definitely realized that's a flaw of mine, I usually find a decent/good joke but I usually just leave them and write down a different one, I definitely need to elaborate on basically the majority of the ones I wrote.

In my notebook I have some that are legit stories and a few I can definitely keep going with, Idk why I always feel like I second guess everything too, like I find it really funny at first, but after mulling it over I just start picking it apart and hate it and either discard it or just leave it like it is which is another major flaw I have.

The jokes themselves would probably be the easiest part for me, the tieing them together and making a story I feel will take a lot of time but I'm willing to put the time in and at least try.

I'm sure all the greats do the same thing. I'd wager they probably trash the majority of their attempts because they just don't flow naturally or come out how they want it. People in comedy don't just sit down and write a few lines and call it done. They devote a lot of time working on their material.

I forget his username here but Jonathan Marin is
a pretty frequent poster here and he's fairly well
known in the NYC comedy club circuit. Whatever that is.

If you search for something along the lines of a thread
named "How's my standup" you'll run into it and find
his username. Or just check out his youtube videos.

His jokes are based mostly around drugs, specifically
psychedelics which I find very entertaining, but
repetitive.

Standup comedy has to be the most nerve-wracking sort of performance I can think of honestly. It takes a lot of balls to get up there.

People irl tell me that I'm funny, and one of my old roommates actually told me that he thought I'd do good at a one of the amateur standup shows around the city a while back, but there's no way in hell that I'd escape something like that without feeling mildly traumatized or vomiting all over myself or something, I used to be able to do acting and dance performances infront of audiences as a kid and teenager, but I've got the worst stage fright as an adult and grew to hate it.

I can  see it quickly deteriorating into a Sweet Dee situation.

Man, If I did standup comedy. Most of my act would be either making fun of myself or making puns, and then talking about how I do that alot.

Quote:

So I make puns alot, and I love them. I mean I'll think of a pun in my head and I'll just start laughing. Some people really don't find puns funny. Which I just don't get. One day I was talking to my girlfriend, and I started making vegetable puns. I was like "Lettttuce go already, if you don't hurry up we're not gonna have a date".

So when she looked at me like why are you threatening to cancel, I pulled out a date and was like they're really good. She gave me that look, of how unfunny she thought I was. But man, I could barely tell because I was laughing too hard

That's my shot at standup comedy. From an outside view, you just gotta not give a shit. And keep prying for those laughs. Louis C.K. is a pretty funny comedian. Have you seen his TV show? They're pretty much what standup comedy seems to be.

I feel like I'd have to have a few drinks before I got on the first time, not enough to get drunk or even close to drunk, but just enough to take the nerve off. I always think about doing that when I give it a try but I know that's a stupid and probably bad habit to get into lol.

I feel like the thought of bombing is worse than actually bombing, even though it's basically almost like getting into an awkward situation with a stranger you'll never see again type of deal, especially starting out because you don't have a name in the industry and you're not well known at all.

Definitely the biggest thing holding me back is the thought of it or freezing up

@Kroniko, thanks dude I'm definitely gonna check him out, hopefully he can at least give me some tips on starting out because I feel like I'm overthinking it big time.
