Quote:
To further demonstrate the limitations of these senses, Descartes proceeds with what is known as the Wax Argument. He considers a piece of wax; his senses inform him that it has certain characteristics, such as shape, texture, size, color, smell, and so forth. When he brings the wax towards a flame, these characteristics change completely. However, it seems that it is still the same thing: it is still the same piece of wax, even though the data of the senses inform him that all of its characteristics are different. Therefore, in order to properly grasp the nature of the wax, he should put aside the senses. He must use his mind. Descartes concludes:
And so something that I thought I was seeing with my eyes is in fact grasped solely by the faculty of judgment which is in my mind.
Of course, Descartes was talking about the nature of perception, but i'm just using it to illuminate the need to look beyond the obvious. Rather than asking "what?" we need to be asking "why?"

That is correct. Cowards run away from information and contemplation that might contradict their opinions.

Some people have conservaphobia. They are afraid of what they don't understand.
-------------------- “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835) Trade list http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18047755

Then you're all like libtards be using ad-hominem.
Do you work at the irony or does it just come naturally?

"conservatism" is simply a nice word for corporatism. There is no such thing as a small government movement in America ... that's just a slogan. No movement to seriously cut spending, shrink government, eliminate entitlements ... ALL PURE BS.
Conservatives push corporatism ... plain and simple. They push for more corporate power ... more corporate influence ... more corporate money in the political process.
The argument is actually safety nets + regulated markets (what is now called socialism) vs. corporate control of government (what the GOP is actually all about)
Conservatives want to privatize all the profits and socialize all the costs and risks and blame government for all the unfunded liabilities ... LMAO!!!! And the conservative sheep that vote for this lunacy just eat it up.

The Ds and the Rs aren't much different outside of the far right and the far left. They pick different scapegoats but they're both out of touch with the working class.

That's true. Unfortunately, the same appears to be true about Democrats in this country. They apparently want Hillary. There is a huge movement within the party, but it doesn't really mean a whole lot. Even if Bernie won, the corporatist Democrats in congress will keep voting centrist. A few good ones like Alan Grayson, Elizabeth Warren and some others will stand up for American labor, but that's about it. This country will continue to polarize until it strangles itself.
America hasn't been so polarized as it is now since the Civil War. The right has its extremist Libertarian Teabaggers, and the left has its 'Socialists' (which in modern day America is considered fringe extremism!). The media is moving closer and closer to the kind of corruption you might expect from the opressive governments of the 20th century, and the people are uneducated and uninformed.

QFT! Great post. 100% accurate assessment of what is happening right now. This is the main reason I think the best solution is a break up of America. The idea that we will "come together" is total nonsense. We're too big, too bloated, and too polarized.
In the 08/09 financial train wreck, a lot of states came dangerously close to not being able to pay their bills. Another shock like that or worse will put them into even worse financial shape ... this could create the conditions for the breakup ...

In my humble opinion, I don't think America is anywhere near polarized enough
